EV RANGE TEST: 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Takes Down Rivian R1T

The EPA ratings say the opposite, but our real-world test data knows what's up
  • The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum beat its EPA range by 32 miles in Edmunds' real-world EV range test.
  • Based on our testing, the F-150 Lightning has slightly more range and is also slightly more efficient than the Rivian R1T Launch Edition, which is the opposite of what the EPA numbers predict.
  • There are only a few choices for an electric truck at the moment, but the F-150 Lightning is by far the most accessible — as long as it's not the mega-expensive Platinum trim we tested here.

Devil always in details.

I like Edmunds range test, but they need to improve their understanding of EVs as their numbers are misleading without caveats..

Their first rivian test had some flaw, they got better range on rivians 20 inch AT tires than the 21 inch AS tires. Rivian notes a 40 mile loss on ATs. So really its EPA is 274 which they don't mention.

Their numbers:

R1t AS: 317 (EPA 314)
R1t AT: 323 (EPA 274)

No scenario that this should happen if all things are equal between the tests

Two things likely played a role in their first r1t test that caused issues:

1. Colder weather. 53f outside , and heating cabin to 72f.

2. Early model: range test was nov. 2021. Rivian likely tweaked efficiency since then with OTAs.

“we'd logged a total of 332 GPS-verified miles, about 10 miles more than what we saw on the Lightning's onboard trip meter”

interesting

Approximately 3.1% more. Now that I know this, if I go to sell my F150L with 300,000 on the odometer. Would I be committing fraud knowing that my truck actually did 309,316 miles?

No. You’re just verifying that the odometer hasn’t been tampered with.

Good result. Not surprising with a 60% city/40% highway test. Oddly, they came up with the exact efficiency that I use as my baseline efficiency in ABRP, 454 Wh/mi.
