Yeah that's the paradox I don't get. They see only problems with full size pickups because they are so large but the alternative MB sprinter for example at 7,5m long is totally fine.

That's pure European safety council propaganda. They got scared by the EU-US mutual recognition car safety standards (finally!)and have been generating this stuff ever since.
