2022 Lariat Repaired Buyback For Sale - Would you buy this?

Here's the list of things Ford and/or the dealer did to "fix" the vehicle. I'm looking for a reasonable cost 2022 or 2023 Lariat with 511 package (I want the ER battery, and sunroof). From what I can tell from this report, looks like the only serious issue was a bad HV battery cell. So, I'm tempted to try it out.

It has the standard 12 month/12k mile FORD premium warranty, in addition to all the other standard warranties which still apply.

Details below. But quick summary.
1) Blower module not fully connected, once fully seated, it the interior fan worked properly
2) HV Battery Module replacement (or battery energy control) was replaced and software was updated. I think this is the same as 6) below.
3) Dash mat
4) Battery monitor sensor replacement
5) Rear lightbar recall replacement
6) #7 cell in HV battery module was bad. #7 module was replaced.

There's some verbiage about Vehicle came in disassembled, things unplugged and uninstalled. Seems like it was the dealer which did that, and then shipped the entire thing back to Ford. Since I understand that Ford corporate does the RAV vehicle repairs.

Most of that looks like pretty standard stuff for early model Lightnings - mine was in the 2nd wave of builds and experienced much of that. The real question would be: How much are they asking for it?

I'd like to know the rest of the story. It sounds like a dealer tore the truck apart, couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, and it ended up getting bought back and sent to another dealer for repair.

Run and don’t look back…..dealerships have absolutely zero knowledge of the inner workings of EV’s. Not their fault entirely, trying to teach an old dog new tricks is difficult. Add to that most faults are electrical and or software based and neither dealership nor Ford are any way proficient at debugging these. Ford pulls every trick in the book not to do a buy back and makes life as painful as possible to go through that process ( I had an F250 power stroke I bought new about 10 years ago that had major software issues) they shot gunned the living daylights out of it and basically replaced majority of electronic modules. They never found root cause but the issue stopped occurring (traction control issue) once they changed all the modules out. I settled for 100k miles (truck had 8k on it when issue started) bumper to bumper warranty or 8 years which ever happened first with $100 deductible that was transferable. Kept the truck for 6 months then sold it. I would never buy a lemon (buy back) vehicle and wouldn’t recommend anybody else to do it. But to each their own.

Everything except the battery module replacement and wire harness issue were recalls. Battery module doesn't concern me at all.

The wire harness issue is scary without a really good warranty.

Some things to consider:

Paying less now might not be as good a deal as it seems. The discount reflects the reduced resale value that will follow the vehicle forever. It's also a bet that the vehicle won't break again. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time you don't need to worry about resale value as much.

Is the discount enough to cover reduced resale, any additional repairs, loss of vehicle during repairs, and still have money left over?

Considering I got my not buyback, very low repair history 22 Lariat with 511A + Max Tow for not much more than that, I'd say keep shopping around.

Agreed, there are some dealers that are part of the RAV process and they repair these buybacks and then sell them. And if everything was working after the RAV process I'd likely buy the vehicle. The issue I would have is the 'branded' title. I would want another discount beyond what the going wholesale rate is simply cause I'm buying something that has a branded title. Even if it now works perfectly.

I looked into getting a buyback/lemon but ended up finding a really good deal on a private purchase so did not go through with it.

One thing to keep in mind is that buybacks are hard to finance. There's only about 4-5 banks that do it (they'll be available at the dealer most likely) and the interest rates are much higher. None of my local credit unions wanted to touch it. The one or two that considered it would treat it as unsecured personal loan - which is a much higher interest rate.

Also sometimes insurance can be difficult as well.

Just something to keep in mind even if you get comfortable with this one's repair history.

You know your stuck with it forever right ? Whether it’s fixed or not it’s a branded title and most ford dealers do not know how to fix them IF they did this probably wouldn’t have been bought back and Theresa no guarantee it’s fixed now . You want to playthat gamble ? The truck is worthless to Ford once you buy it you would literally lose 10-15k if you wanted to trade it .

I would negotiate the following: get them to throw in the 10 year 150,000 mile bumper to bumper Ford Premuim Care EV warrenty and try to get them down to the low 30's. How many miles does this truck have on it?

I personally wouldn't consider it unless it's below 30k. There's options in better condition for not much more than the asking price and you're taking a risk that they didn't figure out all the problems.
