Apple talked about some new features coming up for Carplay in 2023 in the WWDC:

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/202...-plans-to-take-over-every-screen-in-your-car/

This is going to be a very significant change. If the 2023 Lightning supports this, I suspect a lot more will be replaced behind the dash than just the Sync-4 system.

I really hope this feature works on the 2023 models. It seems amazing.

Everyone says next year infotainment is driven by Android. Does it even support apple CarPlay? I’d think it’s pretty low on the integration list.
It is using Android Automotive - which is an Operating System. Android Auto is the tech that is similar to Apple Carply.

So:

Operating System driving the screen in the Lightning:
2022 Sync-4 OS (QNX based)
2023 Android Automotive (Android Linux)

Phones:
Android Phone -- Android Audo
iPhone -- Apple Carplay

I hope it’s going to be good. I’d hate for Folks who didn’t get 2022’s to get 2023 with Android Automotive without CarPlay working.
Carplay will still work.
But I am not so sure the 2022 model was designed to support CarPlay directly updating the gauge cluster as seen in the WWDC presentation.

Knowing manufacturers, they will add this only to new models to drive sales.

Honestly hope they don't go that route. I don't need to lose all instrumentation if carplay/android auto disconnects or freezes up. Please keep infotainment and actual driving controls/displays separate. This a big reason I have no interest in the Model 3 / Y

At the end of the segment, she said cars would "start to be announced late next year." That's way too late for any MY23 car. Maybe MY24.

I don't think you'll see anything close to this anytime soon. I'm sure Ford has the contract all signed for the android based infotainment system. I also can't see them allowing so much access to vehicle specific items...

2022 will support it, I mean digital gauge clusters have been around for a couple of years and I’m sure CarPlay was tested on those older clusters

Agree, with iOS 16 updates by Apple along with app updates from Ford OTA - should be easy to do.

More GUI and functionality added...

I doubt you would lose instrumentation - my guess is that part is driven by the car, and the overlay is driven by your phone. If you phone freezes, the overlay would continue.

That would be the right way to do it; will have to see how it works in practice.

Expecting good software interaction between companies (in this case it would be Ford, Google (android automotive), and Apple. Yeah - my expectations are low.

Anything controlling the drivetrain or key instrumentation (speed, temp, state of charge, etc.) should not have anything to do with your phone. That software isn't tested to near the same level of quality/reliability.
