They don't need a week to diagnose it, they need a day at most. If they want to keep your truck for a week find another dealership that will make an appointment.

Replacing your vehicle might make you feel better but it will cost a whole lot more than whatever a battery replacement costs. I'm not saying don't get rid of it. If you don't think you can have confidence in it you won't be happy with it. Just don't get rid of it for financial reasons.
I am not getting rid of it for financial reasons. More for the uncertainty. I would hate to have a module replaced, and then a week or 2 later it happens to one of the other modules that is over 100k. I understand that it can happen to any vehicle, however with the SSM out and it seemingly happening more and more recently, it is just difficult to trust this vehicle going forward at high mileage.

@Ford Motor Company being completely silent on this topic really isn’t helping anyone…

Shame the modules are so expensive from the dealer. You can get an ER pack (9 modules, presumably all good) for $4000ish on eBay. That’s how much Ford charges for one.

If nothing else, there should be an extremely generous core refund, like $3500+, and the damaged cell be replaced by Ford after diagnosis.

They just don’t seem to care. That won’t work out for the Fathom. They have the chance to step up but I don’t know that they will.

This is a great point. If I'm paying for a full swap, I'm keeping the old module.

Seems needlessly wasteful if true. Also, if that is the case, where do they get the refurbished or re-manufactured arrays the warranty allows them to use?

To replace cells on a module, you have to match voltage/age to achieve a balanced system.
That means keeping an inventory of used cells and testing and (safely) storing and maintaining them. Perhaps a niche business opportunity but not a profitable venture for Ford.

But doesn't Ford do exactly this when they replace one module (40-55 pouch cells) and bench balance them to the other aged 8 modules (hundreds of other pouch cells) in the overall pack. I am not claiming to be an expert, but new cells are balanced to old cells either way?

When you replace a module with a new one you need to pre-match voltage, capacity, and internal resistance within tight tolerance (often ±10% or tighter).

The cells balance at full charge but the matching of the module IR within 10% before installation is really the "balancing" of new to old that is by far the most important and will lead to the best long term outcome.

MODULES are balanced to each other ..... the cells within the NEW module are already balanced as a group out of manufacturing, but the 'group' aka module needs to be in sync with the other eight modules.

Right the dealership is not going to do a cell level repair, but that's absolutely happening in the real world at specialized facilities. Whether or not Ford ships modules back to a remanufacturer I have no clue, but the principle I'm describing exists and it seems like a valid approach to cost control as well designed for repair as the Ford pack appears to be.

I'm under the impression the physical limitations of disassembly of the cells from the current collectors is a concern, the way they're welded cell by cell makes for a challenge re-welding all the cells with the new / reclaimed cell from other packs to reconstitute a good module.

Maybe some designs give better access than others, the video talks about the possibility / limits around the 13 to 16 minute mark.

Redwood Materials refines the recoverable elements for blending into new stock materials for freshly manufactured cells / modules that are then inserted into the pack.

If all your original modules are fairly degraded and one goes out and needs to be replaced, does that mean it can't be replaced with a new one since it would outside the tolerance?

Wow call me crazy but looking to replace the truck at not willing to spend a $200 diagnostic fee seems a bit crazy.

You can't hardly get a 'paperwork processing fee' on a used car for less than $200.

If you want a new car or truck so be it.

You got a bad module and that's frustrating but taxes alone on another vehicle will cost you what the module will cost.

Call me crazy but I'd repair and drive another 50,000 miles. Theres nothing else like this truck on the market save maybe the GM versions.

He doesn't need the diagnostic fee to know what the remedy is. Needs a new array.

If 50,000 miles were guaranteed, say by Ford in the form of an extended coverage agreement, then sure that's a sound point.

But this truck has 9 modules, any of them can fail without a DTC, and Ford isn't explaining why that is happening, other than they're seeing it across all model years now.

@Ford Motor Company want to chime in?

I wanted a price for them to replace the module. I know what the issue is (or will be since it’s still not an actual problem). Truck still drives fine, however it’s the uncertainty. Especially driving with kids and for work daily not being able to be out of a vehicle.

If they had said it was $6000 to replace it and they’d order it that day, I was ready to get the truck repaired. Instead, they said they need it for a week just to diagnose.

The truck could be fine for another 50k even with one had module, or I can get it fixed and then one of the other 8 goes in a week. Like I said, uncertainty and no guarantee of after repair.
