Charging to 100%

I recently decided to charge my 2022 SR Lightning Lariat at a full 100% charge. Since I only put on about 35-40 miles a day, I usually set the charging limit to 90% and plug it in overnight in a Level 1 charging outlet at my house. I have a 240v Level 2 outlet at my son's house, which I use on occasion, and connect to it with the provided Ford Mobile Charging unit. For whatever reason, I decided to switch the charging level 100%. When I checked the read out the next day, it showed an Estimated Distance to Empty at 270 miles! The night time temperature was steady at 65 degrees. My question is this....has anyone else recorded a similar result on a SR Lariat? I have not charged at 100% since that first time, but I am planning a 250 mile trip to south Jersey and back so another crack at 270 might be in order.

The GOM is overly optimistic when charging to a high percentage. I don't have a SR Lariat, but unless your constant speed is less than 45 to 50 mph, I guarantee you don't get 260. I can barely get that range on freeway driving with an ER.

Think of it this way. With a 98kw battery, you would have to average 2.7 mi/kWh efficiency over the course of the trip, amd you would arrive at your destination completely dead. I can't even do that with our more aerodynamic Mach-E.

Thanks for the response. That being said, overly optimistic or not, it was still pretty neat to see the 270 mile range displayed on the screen. Theoretical or reality, I'll see what happens on my future road trip. As an aside, I'm a 73 year old senior and I usually do drive less than 50 mph......my wife hates it!

Good for you. My dad just turned 74 and I can't get him to consider an electric vehicle.

Good luck on your road trip. Just have a backup plan in case you can't make it. You can use A Better Route Planner or Plugshare to see the chargers on your route.

Thanks. August 10th will mark my first year anniversary of owning and driving my Lariat Lightning. I'm going to try to post a not too wordy description of my year's experience. Sneak preview....it's been great!

I've seen it many times myself, and am very reserved about what it 'tells' me... it's not about the guessometer itself, it's about what actual m/kwh you will get along the way - no matter what the guessometer says, right or wrong, it's JUST a guesstimation...

Downhill the whole way, with wind behind you, yes... no worries

wind, higher temps, faster speeds... no, never.

The battery can't suddenly give you something it can't possibly give you, no matter what it says.

although, it IS fun to see those high number sometimes : ) drive slowly!

I just did a 67 mile trip with efficiency of 2.7 mi/KWh (similar range to yours) with my standard range battery. My break score was 98% and driving score was 94%. If you have to drive around in south Jersey when you get there and you have to do public charging there anyway, do it before getting there so are not stressed out about making it. And watch your efficiency during the trip both ways. On SR math is simple. On one of my regular trips, I always use less energy getting there and more when I return. There is some elevation loss going in. Your driving habits are perfect for Lightning. Let us know how you did.

with our battery packs being basically '100kwh' in size, I just use simple math to calculate my 'range', and keep things simple: 100% equals 200 miles, or 100 miles if towing my camper. 80% is 160 miles farther, or 80 miles to go in my camper, before I need another charge, or I have reached my destination...

yes, we 'can' go farther, but the laws of REALITY are what is holding us back: we have to stop WHERE the DC Fast Chargers are... and they are rarely right at the end of our range.

Nor should they be. You'll find things work better when you can pick your charging locations based on your needs (hunger, restroom use, need to stretch legs) than when you get near to having no range left. If that means topping up from 50% to 85%, then so be it.

Planning is a whole lot easier now than it was in 2019 when I did our first road trip in our Focus Electric. Having a range of about 180 km (about 110 miles) combined with a more sparse DCFC network, meant we had to plan around our charge stops. Also, the planning had to be like fuelling an aircraft: not only does an aircraft need enough fuel to reach the planned destination, but also enough to reach an alternate from there should it be needed.

I'm surprised your wife has not left you!! I'm a 71 year old and I never drive below 72 on the highway. As for it being "pretty neat" seeing the 270 mile range, I too think it's neat when my ER shows 325 range; but I know it's fake -- just like my bathroom scale is fake when I stand on it in a funny way and it shows a weight less than what I really weigh; it might make me feel good, but I know it's not real.
