I believe the OP is an Elon fan and mad that the current administration opened up the NEVi funds to a fair and legal process instead of just funneling the money to a narcissistic man child that really hasnā€™t accomplished that much in the last few years either, unless you like a remote controlled robot or preprogrammed taxi routes to show off your ā€œautonomousā€ features, just like DJI has done for years where my drone can be autonomous as long as I fly and record the flight path first. šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

While Teslaā€™s EVs are great and the tech was so far advanced, their software is the only thing that makes them successful currently and to that they still had bugs.

My M3 the other day was randomly doing lane changes on I-5 at 2:00 in the morning with no one around on FSDšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø. Sure it is a beta, but it has been beta even longer then you all have been waiting on the next version of BlueCruise.

I am extremely grateful Elon and the team opened up the supercharger network to all evā€™s, but I wonder if that is part of the reason why the team was let go?

At the end of the day we need chargers, we need operators that maintain their sites, and we need some type of regulation over the price per kilowatt they charge cause I have seen some insane ā€œdemandā€ pricing you guys have posted around your travels.

I personally hope that we as ā€œthe movementā€ doesnā€™t forget we still need LV 2 and even potential sub 100 kW charging in areas people will be for all day or for a few hours.

My daughter has an older Hyundai compliance EV and I was showing her how itā€™s 170 miles of range was okay for her as a light road tripper as she was starting to get frustrated, but guess what we struggled to find LV 2 in Portland. In Salem we have tons, but Portland has several old installations that were all ā€œbrokenā€ on PlugShare so we had to DCFC when really the two hours we were parked would have been more then enough.

So we need to look at the holistic issue not just DCFC on the interstate system.
There may be a 4 year set back for Federal funding of EV's and infrastructure depending on whether the new admin changes the IRS rules for EVs and impounds funds for EV infrastructure or not - but states and companies can continue spending the money they have been granted already.

An oil company exec who says climate change is a hoax has been nominated to be the head of the Energy Dept. which along with the Transportation Dept. nominee Sean Duffy (former lumberjack athlete) will administer/eliminate the EV programs.

But Tesla will benefit "Musk himself said on a call with investors in July that eliminating the federal tax credits could benefit Tesla in the long-term in part because 'it would be devastating for our competitors.'" ( AlphaSense. "Tesla Inc. Q2 2024 Earnings Call." )

What could go wrong?

Some businesses have been installing free L2 chargers around here (Virginia) since 2012, Walgreens and Barrel of Crackers for example. Though the Walgreens nearest me took theirs down after it have been vandalized many times.

The Tesla fast charger adapter from Ford I am supposed to get is still MIA anyway.

There is a list of magic dock equipped ones being compiled here if you want to add to it:

National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. Itā€™s a federal program to give money to each state to build out chargers along major routes. The goal is chargers every 50 miles along what they call alternative fuel corridors. Each state has to prepare a plan and submit it to the DOT and once approved the state take proposals from charge point operators to build the stations. Some states moved quickly while others have been dragging the process out for political reasons. Here in NC the first sites have been awarded but I havenā€™t seen any progress on construction yet. If you google it there should be a website for your state with details.

Based on the original requirements Tesla would not qualify for any NEVI funds. NEVI intended for the chargers to operate up to 1000V and V3s only go to 500V. Telsa has weaseled their way around that because the NEVI requirements were poorly worded. NEVI also requires a credit card terminal and only V4s are capable of that.

Here are links to the federal site and NC for reference.

$168K per charging port, am I the only one who thinks this is insanely high?

Thatā€™s about the cost of an upper trim Lightning plus a MachE. There are a lot of people on this forum that have that combo.

Thanks for sharing this!
The author of this, Loren McDonald, posts a lot of good charging information on LinkedIn. If you are on LinkedIn heā€™s worth a follow.

Transformers are extremely expensive, and the charger units are as well. Then there is engineering and construction.
According to a study from the International Council on Clean Transportation, DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) cost approximately $28,000 to $140,000 installed. This is the total installation cost per station. Factors that drive costs include the kW charging capacity, the brand of DC Fast Charger, sitework necessary for installation, and local labor rates. Approximate installation costs increase significantly based on the kW charging capacity of the stations:

  • Networked 50kW DCFC ā€“ $28,000
  • Networked 150kW DCFC ā€“ $75,000
  • NetWorked 350kW DCFC ā€“ $140,000

All I know is that this is what I see when I pull into a new Tesla Supercharger site. Thatā€™s 68 stalls in Temple. 20 or so were V4. All I checked had adapters (had to move from the V4 because Fordpass did not work and the V4 cabinets did not have lables). I helped a BMW and a Hyundai figure out how to release the adapter and install the app to pay. SCs took 2hrs off my trip vs using CCS and there were hundreds of new SC stalls vs last year and AFAIK no new CSS.

And this is what a non-Tesla site looked like. 8 total stalls, 6 offline, the one I used went to ā€œPower Conserveā€ after 10kwh were delivered at 150kw and it dropped to 1kw. Junk.

That must be the Bucees in Temple. They also have some on the Mercedes-Benz charging network I believe. I used the superchargers there end of September.

It shows Tesla 68 stalls and Mercedes-Benz 8!
That is laughable.
