While I wait, what is the effective difference between having this feature and not, in terms of idle power draw?

Between 300 and 400 watts. If you have an ER, that’s about 1% or so every 4 hours. I got the update and I still just leave the truck on. I’m not jacking around with a Rube Goldberg timer and heater.

Not Brian not AI, but I can confirm that a bad/weak 12 volt battery absolutely will prevent you from successfully getting over-the-air (OTA) software updates. That could include the update that enables this feature. I would address that first. Lots of threads on here about it.

Yes it's pretty crazy that maintaining the 12 volt battery seems to be the biggest weak point of these trucks, given how long we have been using 12 volt lead acid batteries.

It's also been a weak point for Hyundai and other EVs

Yes, as I have been doing all along, I'll just be leaving the truck on (and turning off various things and covering the monitors, etc.). I wanted to make my comment as it appeared that Ford was following this thread and wanted to get my feedback in.

May be a dumb question but why do you cover the monitors.

Because if you leave your truck on outside overnight and you have these big gleaming screens on, it's basically like having candies out but covered in a thin coat of cellofane in front of kids. It's an invitation to thieves. They think you left your vehicle on and its easy pickings when they would have just walked on by.

Wow, not insignificant ... that's like 6% per day. No wonder it ate into my reserve during my last, 4-day camping trip.

She's right about the failed updates being rescheduled, they come via the trucks telematics 4g cell connection not satellite signals (in the direct sense). Some updates might be received via wifi connection if you've enabled that function in your truck via the SYNC screen, but only few items have been known to transfer via wifi.

We are indeed left to the arbitrary scheduling of when a reissuance will occur, there is no way for us to force these updates to download on command.

so I called in to Ford and they told me to call my local dealer because the update (Powertrain 28.8.5 for 2023 Lightning) failed and was later expired. The dealer looked into this a bit and they told me that the update was cancelled for me. So I asked them why it was cancelled and they said since I had newer updates I should be good to go. However, my last update was sometime in June (based on what the Ford tech said when I called in - my app shows last update in April). The dealership said the newer update superseded 28.8.5 so I should be good. However, I still don’t have the silent update that gives me the PPOB when off feature. Can someone please help? I feel like I’m getting the run around and nobody knows what I’m talking about. Thanks.

Hopefully it will come when Ford is good & ready to send it to you, there isn't much anyone can do otherwise, I don't know if there is an equivalent FDRS update for this, but if there is .... you could pay shop labor rate to the dealership for a manually update of your truck.

For that use case it certainly makes a difference. For a tradesman powering tools during the workday, it‘s not a factor.

A bit of a disappointing experience yesterday. I took my truck to the local Ford dealership for my 50,000 service and also to check on the recall. I asked them about applying my missing software updates and they said they could not do it, only if it was recall related. I feel like they don’t know much about EVs. I’m really starting to lose faith in Ford. Each time I call in I get told something slightly wrong and certainly this dealer has no idea how to help me with any software updates. I could really use some help here.

You aren't alone in that sentiment or predicament. I had both the Trailer and Parking SW recall updates done a month ago. I also still do not have this update. I was hoping the dealer updates for the recall portion would remind Ford that I exist. Just have to keep waiting....

They certainly CAN do it; they just won't get paid for their time by Ford unless it's a recall/warranty case. You can pay them shop rates to do it.
