Customer Wait Times to Shrink as F-150 Lightning XLT Production Scales; No Reservation Needed for Retail Orders

Ford F-150 Lightning Ford Boosting F-150 Lightning XLT Production to Reduce Customer Delivery Wait Times 1686231921630

DEARBORN, Mich, June 8, 2023 – Ford is on track to increase production of the F-150 Lightning® at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center this fall to reduce customer wait times. The high-demand F-150 Lightning XLT model gains the largest initial production increase with new retail orders made today estimated to deliver as early as September.

Ford also continues to accept retail customer orders for the Lariat® and Platinum models.

“Customer interest for XLT has considerably outstripped supply since the F-150 Lightning launch and we’ve worked with our suppliers to help address that,” said Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer, Ford Model e. “We heard loud and clear from our customers that they want their truck deliveries as close as possible to their orders. As we scale production, we are making this possible.”

You can order exactly the F-150 Lightning you want from your local Ford dealer online at ford.com or in-store. The F-150 Lightning XLT, with a starting MSRP (1) of $64,474 , delivers an EPA-estimated range of 240 (2) miles. The available extended-range battery has an EPA-estimated range of 320 (3) miles and 580 horsepower (4) starting at $78,874.

The F-150 Lightning XLT – with standard range battery and most configurations for extended range battery – is eligible for $7,500 in potential federal tax credits. (5)

When equipped with the extended range battery and Max Trailer Tow Package, F-150 Lightning offers a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds (6). Pro Trailer Hitch Assist (TM), an industry first, automatically controls steering, throttle and brake inputs to help make hitching trailers easier. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist is standard with the Tow Technology Package available on XLT.

The production increase for the F-150 Lightning is part of Ford’s plan to scale electric vehicles and make them more accessible to customers. Ford is on track to triple F-150 Lightning production by the end of this year to an annual rate of approximately 150,000 units, to help meet customer demand for the high-tech truck.

The 2023 MotorTrend Truck of the Year winner, F-150 Lightning is the smartest, most innovative F-150 that Ford has ever built, with the freedom of an available 9.6-kilowatt smart power plant on wheels with Pro Power Onboard, software updates that help make it even better over time and Built Ford Tough capability.

F-150 Lightning drivers can access the BlueOval Charge Network, one of North America’s largest public charging network (7) with over 84,000 chargers. Starting next year, F-150 Lightning drivers will also have access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers, making it the largest integrated fast-charge network across the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, Ford dealers are adding roughly 1,800 public-facing fast-chargers and locations to the BlueOval Charge Network by early 2024.

Customers can order their F-150 Lightning from their local dealer here or in-store.

This is great news.

The XLT badge has been the mainstream trim level on just about every truck they make, including F-150, Super Duty, Ranger, Explorer, and Maverick for a long time.

My Lightning is my 3rd XLT because it fits my preferences as a step above entry level, without luxury features that don't fit my personality.

2001 FORD RANGER, 2023 F-150 LIGHTNING
a starting MSRP (1) of $64,474
Still a bit pricey for me and probably a lot of others.
And about $34k more than the ICE F-150 XLT version.

The justification has been supply chain issues, etc., driving up battery material costs, and they did take a big jump in 2022.

On the one hand, it could be worse, statisticians at DOE estimate EV batteries are 90% LOWER now than in 2008:

"The Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Vehicle Technologies Office estimates the cost of an electric vehicle lithium-ion battery pack declined 89% between 2008 and 2022 (using 2022 constant dollars). The 2022 estimate is $153/kWh on a usable-energy basis for production at scale of at least 100,000 units per year. That compares to $1,355/kWh in 2008. The decline in cost is due to improvements in battery technologies and chemistries, and an increase in manufacturing volume."

On the other hand (Bloomberg/BNEF) says about the recent 2022 bump up in materials price and an expected increase in 2023:

" In 2022, volume-weighted price of lithium-ion battery packs across all sectors averaged $151 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), a 7% rise from 2021 and the first time BNEF recorded an increase in price. Now, BNEF expects the volume-weighted average battery pack price to rise to $152/kWh in 2023."

And on yet another hand, the IEA says that since the beginning of 2023, the cost of materials to make EV batteries has started to decline (link to image).

https://www.iea.org/data-and-statis...materials-and-lithium-ion-batteries-2015-2023

And recently the NYT reported the same:

"Falling Lithium Prices Are Making Electric Cars More Affordable
An unexpected decline in the price of an essential battery material, along with those of other commodities, is good news for buyers. But experts disagree on how long low prices will last..."

Still pricey to replace the Lightning battery which will cost around $30k according to motorbiscuit in January:

"...Replacing the Ford F-150 Lightning battery can cost around $30,000, depending on which dealer you purchase it from. This is the cost for the standard range and the extended range battery pack.

Pickup Truck Talk shared that they found a local extended-range battery with 320 miles of range for $35,960 and a standard-range battery with 230 miles of range for $28,556. At those prices, you could buy a used truck!"

https://www.motorbiscuit.com/replacing-ford-f-150-lightnings-battery-cheap/

If and when EV batteries go back to the downward trending price of the past, which maybe they are starting to do, and as more EV pickup truck competition enters the market, then the Lightning XLT MSRP ought to head south to more affordable levels.

And the "project T3" could also be a game changer in that respect post 2025:

'...Ford calls Project T3 “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revolutionize America’s truck” by combining a century of truck know-how with world-class electric vehicle, software and aerodynamics talent...'

https://media.ford.com/content/ford...ric-truck--project-t3--at-blueoval-city-.html

They may have to buy Aptera (drag coefficient 0.13) to get that "aerodynamics talent."

We haven't seen much evidence of it at Ford so far, or the other big automakers, with regards to pickups. Even Tesla's upcoming Cybertruck looks like a big heavy air dam "... The Tesla Cybertruck has a drag coefficient that is estimated to be around 0.39, which is good for a pickup, although it's not the best...." - it's an estimate though.

https://insideevs.com/news/600765/tesla-cybertruck-aerodynamic-simulation/

Their Model 3: "...the Tesla Model 3, which has a drag coefficient of just 0.23 – making it the most aerodynamic standard roadworthy car in the world..." - that is, until the Aptera is released (soon I hope).

https://www.irishevs.com/ethical-car-design-aerodynamics

According to Rivian their "R1T has a drag coefficient of 0.30 Cd, compared to around 0.44 Cd for the Ford F-150 Lightning." Andbetter than the Cybertruck.

https://insideevs.com/news/611642/rivian-r1t-aerodynamics-drag-coefficient-simulatiion/

Weight and aerodynamics are keys to range and therefor battery requirements. Obviously, weight affects frictional resistance of the tire/ground interface, aerodynamics the air resistance.

Surprising Ford didn't consider those when designing the Lighting from the start?
Definitely need some new blood there.

Show me where you can get a SuperCrew XLT 4x4 starting at $30k with a $7500 tax credit. I'll go out and buy it tomorrow. Not to mention you would have to jump to the 302A package and hybrid engine to get a gas truck equivalent to the Lightning.

Weight and aero were definitely considered. The bodywork ahead of the cab is totally different from the ICE F150 for drag reduction. The weight is a result of customer demand for range. Ford made a business decision to start with a frame/cab/bed that they already produced in hopes of getting a jump on the market. There are certainly manufacturing compromises and aero is pretty awful but I'm glad they did it. The Lightning fits my needs ("wants" is probably more accurate😁) perfectly. T3 might have more range and be more efficient but I don't care because I don't need more range and my interest in efficiency is more fascination than practical value. I'm guessing there are a lot of EV truck buyers like me.
