Free 360kW Charging on the way to Vegas! Off-grid solar + battery powered site

On our Lightning road trip from the Bay Area to Vegas we stopped at one of the coolest EV charging sites I’ve seen yet! Power Station Charging in Baker, CA is an off-grid solar + battery powered site with up to 360kW CCS charging and right now charging is FREE through the end of May

The station delivered a full 500A boost and followed the Lightning charging curve really well. Huge thanks to fellow Ford owner Patrick from The Electric Duo for telling me about this place! 🪫

Is it going away of just no longer free? It would not make sense to install it and remove it a few months later.

Just no longer free but it will still be there and they mentioned there is another location they should be opening soon. No word on pricing yet.

The next location is near Barstow, about 70 miles to the south. That’s an interesting choice – Tesla has over 220 stalls in that area (EA has eight). But if they can use the off-grid design to keep prices low, I’m sure they will attract customers.

Yeah Baker is similar with 2 Telsa and an EA. I know of a 3rd location being built out as well and there are also 2 Tesla locations there. Might have to get them on the podcast and see how their model works and their thoughts on placement. It’s interesting for sure.

I was very happy when Tesla opened the 2nd location in Baker since the original one is Tesla only. I ended up using the new one just a few weeks after it opened last fall.

I didn’t stop at the new one yet that was my original plan and then they reminded me of this free option but I want to check out that new stop I here there are so good Tacos there!

The Baker gas station with the Electrify America has the most disgusting bathroom. The stations are always throttled due to the heat and number of EVs charging during the day. There's usually 2-3 chargers that break. There's also usually 4-8 Non-teslas waiting in line for a EA station to open up. It's basically the only decent charger stop before Las Vegas. One of my least favorite charging stops.

So glad another charger option opened up before Baker. I look forward to avoiding the terrible experience at that gas station EA. Thanks for the report about this new site.

We just did a Podcast with the CEO today as well they have a lounge they will be opening and more charging they will be adding. Also adding a Barstow Charger probably early next year followed by two more locations after that.

You are outdated. Although the Tesla station next to the E.A. station in the SW end of Baker is Tesla only, Tesla has opened a second station in the NE end of Baker that is open to non-Tesla vehicles. It's a V4 (actually V3.5) station with some pull through spots. Within a 100 yards or so is an Arby's, and a gas station with a large food court with quite a few choices and clean restrooms. I have used that new Tesla station several times. Very nice. And I agree that the E.A. station is not much to write home about...

Not outdated. Intentionally boycotting a company and brand. Saw a quote recently

Been doing just fine without the Supercharger network. I'm not going to have an awareness of a charging network I don't use.

Your point about another charger site in Baker stands. More chargers out in the well-traveled middle of the desert is always welcome.

Your choice. Although I am not overly fond of Elon (especially in the past few years where he has largely gone off his rocker), I have no issue with Tesla as they have done more to bring EVs to the public than pretty much anybody.
Tesla has a far better DCFC network than anybody (in fact pretty much everybody else combined) so limiting them is a substantial impact to charging availability. Note that my statement about everybody else combined is not as true as it used to be as there are more options now (and growing).

My guess is that the non-Tesla vehicles TRIED at the original SuperCharger in Baker and had not figured out that it was not working. Both the Tesla and Ford apps, and PlugShare.com confirm that this is a Tesla only SuperCharger.

Note BTW, that the open one in NE Baker has been offline for a couple weeks according to all three mentioned sources - NFD.
