How do I determine my truck's Curb Weight?

Everyone says "look in the manual". Well, it's not in the manual. The owner's manual and the Towing Guide are generic, not vehicle/option specific. Do I need to go on a catscale or is there an easier way to get that number?

All the info you need is in the drivers door sill. Find the Blue/White label in the upper right side is your GVWR (7150 LB), then find your Tire and Loading Sticker Yellow/white, and take the 'combined weight of occupants and cargo number (1696 lbs). Subtract one from the other, and bam, there is your trucks as-built curb weight.

7150 - 1696 = 5,454 lbs (2021 Lariat 502A super crew, 6.5' box, moon roof, 4x4, ProPower 2kW, max tow)

So my 21' 502A SCREW 4x4:
GVWR 7050 - Payload 1739 = Curb Weight 5311 Lbs.

Now, how do I get GCWR for my truck?

Only place I've seen the GCWR is in the Ford Tech specs brochure. Just have to look up your combination in the charts. Starts on page 9.

It’s also in the sales brochure and the towing guide. It’s not a VIN-specific spec like curb weight and payload.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm sure Ford Engineering + Ford Legal has some precise calculations they use to determine all those numbers. I'm not sure how they get to the GCWR though....

My truck is GVWR = 7,150 lbs
Max Tow Rating = 13,800 lbs
Max GCVWR = 19,400 lbs (which Truck GVWR + Tow Rating = 20,950) which the GCVWR is 1,550 less, so I'm not sure where that goes too, might have something to do with tongue weight, or some calculation with weight distribution.

Basically if you'll be anywhere within 70% of rating, you should probably take it to some scales, and make sure you know how that weight is distributed, and that the truck can handle it.

No more (and no less) than a manufacturer's stated GVWR; both GVWR and GCWR are ultimately a judgement based on consideration of all of the many factors relating to physical capacity, driving performance, and handling, with a dose of equipment longevity and occupant safety considerations thrown in.

As an example, for a given configuration's GVWR do you set the limit at the point where the suspension is compressed to the physical bump-stops? Obviously not, so how much bump-stop clearance should be reserved? That's a judgement call - and there are countless others involved relating to setting a GVW Rating.

For GCWR computer-simulated and actual SAE J2807 testing may play a role.

But yes, any way you cut it there's a judgement factor (in fact many judgement factors) by the manufacturer for those ratings. Call that a "wild guess/rough calculation" if you want, but it's based on a lot of good engineering sense.

Your GVWR + Max Tow Rating will always be less than GCVWR, by the amount of optional Payload.

Reason: Max Tow Rating assumes minimum Payload usage on Truck.

IOW, you get max payload plus some towing or you get minimum payload (150lb driver usually) plus max towing.

So in your case, you stated your Curb Weight was 5454lb, so 5454+13,800 = 19,254lbs. So you are allowed 1 Driver at 145lbs to stay under the GCWR.

Where are you getting your Max Tow Rating from?

Pg 9-12 of the document attached a couple of posts back.

Your sig says you Lariat SCREW 5.0L so your Max Tow is between 9,300 to 13,000 depending on bed length, 4WD or not, and Tow pkg you have.

9,300 is long bed, 4x4 without Max Tow Pkg.

13,000 basically any bed or drive with the Max Tow (actually a couple of combos is 12,900).

Note it doesn't say it right there in that chart, but I believe any Towing above 5000lb requires a WDH (weight distribution hitch).

I wouldn’t agree with that. The manufacturer sets the specs based on engineering input. I wouldn’t disregard them cavalierly.

Ha, so if wanted to max this thing out, I'd need to lose some weight....I don't think I've weighed anywhere near 150lbs since middle school.

The 5,000lb limit is the spec on the receiver hitch, anything over 5,000 needs a WDB hitch.

The hitch on my Lariat with max tow is rated:
5,000 lbs max trailer weight with a max tongue weight of 500 lbs
14,000 lbs max trailer weight with a max tongue weight of 1,400 lbs with weight distributing hitch.
