Not sure how it could be a test mule if they are doing interchangeable battery platform (UEV) from the ground up. It defiantly has a lower roofline, and the B pillars are different. The El Rancho would follow the Lightning name rebrand

American vehicles (and it is mainlyAmerican vehicles) are too bloody big. They're more dangerous to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users. I for one welcome smaller pickups!

And yes, I know I have a lightning. It *is* my work truck. But honestly, a large number of folks here can (and probably would) go with a smaller vehicle.

My ‘63 Falcon Ranchero w/V8 was awesome small pickup. Mine was a nice blue, looked similar to this one though not the fancy wheels, hood, etc.

If it comes in around the right price, I'll be in for one, for sure. I appreciate your sentiment about the size and increased danger. I know it's the wrong forum to espouse these beliefs, but I think there's quite a large portion of full-size truck buyers who would do just fine with a Maverick. I've owned a '68 C10, and currently own an '05 Silverado 1500, and it's comical how large trucks are now.

For day to day, I would be just fine with this little pickup.

"Too big" is subjective. We like big trucks in the U.S., hell we like big EVERYTHING lol especially in Texas.

I'll likely test drive one when they come out to see what ride quality is like, I'm not optimistic of a plush ride in any kind of small vehicle, my old worn out back wouldn't stand much time in the seat of anything smaller as far as trucks go.

I think Aminorjourney's point is that there's not much of a justification for how large full size pickups are, for most people. There will always be outliers, I understand that. But let's be honest for a moment; the bed on the Lightning is small. It's a a full foot shorter than my '05 Silverado's bed, and I find THAT to be inconveniently small. Crew cab pickups are more SUV than pickup (to me) these days.

It's better known as personal choice. People buy what they want. (subjective) Most people, myself included, also don't buy things based on someone else's opinion.

It's personal choice once the Ranchero exists

Right now the personal choice for folks EV-focused is:
- Giant Silverado EV
- Giant F-150 EV
- Medium-giant Rivian R1T (at prices that make the F-150 seem cheap)

That's not much of a choice.

I'm one of the folks who don't need/want a full size truck the size of a 2020s-era F-150 (a 90s era F-150... maybe ) but got it as the least bad of all options. I like it a lot now, and don't regret the purchase, but there is not a lot of choice in the EV truck space.

(noting that I *do know* that Slate/Telo are coming and will add to the menu; but anyone in a Lightning now never had the chance to buy a truly small EV truck)

Ford seems to be taking a Goldilocks approach to product development. The F-150 was probably too big to electrify (as a first electric truck) and the UEV is probably going to be too small. If they ever get around to doing an electric Ranger/Bronco it will probably be just right. Of course if they had asked me 6 or 7 years ago I could have told them that and saved them a lot of time and money .

Good initiative, bad judgement comes to mind. The initiative is great but the judgement that the American market will support the fairy dust of this once it gets to market with insane price-gouging, dealer markups and/or outright msrp deception from now to then will kill it on the vine. No one will practically purchase this in great enough numbers to save Ford from the inevitable.

I think Sierra EV is still a thing but it's a shared platform with Silverado EV, so it's similar in size save for trim packages with different amounts of lift.

Rivian R1T seems like a small truck in the current market but I haven't seen one next to a Maverick, Ridgeline or Santa Cruz. Lightning is on the big size. full size Pickups have grown a lot in the past few decades. I'm a tall guy and I don't like having to use the step on the Lightning, It's on the edge of either being a help or a hindrance.

Sure, and to be clear this is the response I expected. If people were buying what they needed, then pickups would be for utility; they'd be long bed pickups, people wouldn't put hard shell tonneau covers on them, etc etc.

But that's exactly my point. People want the perception of a big pickup, AND the utility of an SUV. Which means it's a compromise; you get a vehicle the size of an Expedition, with two rows of seating and a tiny bed.

People buy what they want; not what they need or will actually use. And to be extra clear, I'm not trying to convince anyone they shouldn't buy what they want. I just am under no illusion that the Lightning is bigger than I need, with the same or similar utility as a pickup that is much, much smaller, and much much cheaper. I'd rather pocket the difference of ~$20K-$30K and ALSO have a better time fitting in parking spots, have a shorter turn radius, lower tailgate height, etc.

At the end of the day, you do you. But I also DON'T agree with your statement that "most people..[]...don't buy things based on someone else's opinion." But that's a different conversation

Feel free to flame me for this, but I think most people would recognize at least part of what I'm saying as true.
