Well cold mornings are here. Temperature was mid to 40s this a.m. I did a quick approx 8 mile round trip drive. No preconditioning. Started the trip with 215, got home and had 203 miles. So 12 miles used for 8 mile trip. No rapid acceleration. Heater wasn't blasting, never passed 50 mph. Used brake regen from one pedal driving about 12 times total. Of course Ford app is glitchy and didn't log the drive (happens a lot Ford..fix it!) so i can't post exact stats. Will try to recreate another day. Has anyone else noticed this kind of drop yet in their Lightning from cold morning drive?

That's due to the heater mostly. And range isn't an odometer...

Was it unplugged overnight?

How was the heater compared to an ice vehicle?

Right. In my experience, it runs pretty hard for the first 5 miles or so getting the cabin up to temp. Once it gets there, it’s not as big of a factor. If I drive 5 miles to the store when it’s below freezing, I’ll get about 1.8 M/kWh going and 2.9-3.1 on the return trip. The same trip in the summer would average about 4.0. Those are Mach-E numbers.

Range and temperature are definitely related, just something that is completely normal. If this is your first EV then it is strange see the range change as you adjust cabin temperature and outdoor temp drops. You get accustomed to it and adjust to it. My Kona EV is rated for about 250 miles. When its 60-70F the range shows about 295 miles and when its 10-20F is shows about 220 miles

we got our Mach-e (GT) down to 1.4 M/kWh on a quick trip in the depths of winter. Love how fast it heats up though - way faster than an ICE. One of this things I am looking forward to with my Lightning is actually having heat for my commute to and from work!

If people paid any attention to the trip average economy in an ice truck they'd probably find that they have a similar decrease in fuel economy for the same type of trip. People just don't pay that much attention because they just fill up the tank whenever the light comes on.

Heat pump would be a huge help. are you listening Ford?
It really wouldn't. heat pumps don't help nearly as much as people think. There was some testing recently released that compared cold weather range reduction across EV models. the Mach-e has almost the exact same range reduction as the Model Y with the heat pump. Ignoring the crazy WLTP rated range for the Mach-e, both the Mach-e and Y got 247 miles in the cold.

They can provide a little benefit in moderate temperatures (say 35ish to 45ish) but not much of anything outside of that range.

Not in the dead of winter. Consumer Reports just tested vs other vehicles. Below 30 it is not helpful.

BS. A Heat pump uses much less energy than a resistance heater. Sure it'll lose efficiency as it gets colder. At that point a resistance heater should kick in but under most circumstances it should absolutely make a difference.
