My first actual accident ever in 27 years of driving happened tonight. Thankfully, my son was fine in the backseat. A woman who had just been in a fight with her boyfriend blew a stop sign and sped out in front of us. Thank goodness there were witnesses and we are totally in the clear and everyone should be fine... Just not my truck...

Wow! I mean, thank goodness you were in a 6000 lb vehicle, built Ford tough and all that. I hope she has good insurance. Also, I am glad to hear that the kid is alright! Blessings indeed.

Now, that I have had a little bit of sleep after that, I am left wondering why at least the steering wheel airbag would not have deployed. Thankfully, my son and I really were physically unharmed in this accident, but it seems like I should have expected that the airbag would have deployed in this situation.

Honestly the damage doesn’t look that bad and I’d be surprised if it is totaled. Air bag probably didn’t come out because there wasn’t much/any intrusion into the crumple area and your rate of deceleration wasn’t high enough. Looks more like she peeled off the lid of an aluminum can.

Glad you and your son are okay!

Having never been in an accident before, I guess I was maybe thinking it was worse than it is. I think my thinking that it might be totaled was because I was thinking there may be damage to the battery pack. Maybe it is salvageable though and can be repaired. I would almost rather it be totaled to avoid what will likely be some pretty lengthy repair times, I'm guessing, but I also wouldn't be too excited for a new loan payment at current rates that are even higher than they were when I bought my truck just under a year ago.

I've been in 3 or 4 fender benders, t-boned twice (one of those my fault after losing control from taking a turn to fast in my S2000). Only once did airbags deploy (when I was in the S2000). I was going slower than you at the time, but since I was essentially hitting a wall (it was a tow truck of all things) the sensors deployed. I actually hurt more on my arms from the airbags deploying than anything else. Really glad to hear that everyone is ok in your situation. It looks like it could have been worse.

I agree that it looks repairable. Whether it gets totalled will likely depend on if there is any frame damage. In my experience, if it ain't the airbags going off, it's the frame that sends the repair over the limit. If you know the other person's insurance, you could call and ask what their threshold is to determine if they total it. Could be as low as 60% of the trucks value, which is still a large chunk of change. Which is why I think it might get repaired.

Dude! Sorry for your "loss".
I do think you will find another Lightning. Of course that will depend upon wether the Insurance Co. thinks it is totaled. You never know with them.
Best of luck through this process.

Sorry to here this.

I'm glad you guys are OK.

Wow, that aluminum peels like aluminum foil in a collision. :(
Is that a bad thing? I don't care what the truck looks like if I'm involved in an accident. These things are some of the safest things on the road for the driver.

Damaged panels need to be replaced, whether made of steel or aluminum. It can resemble a crushed beer can for all I care as long as everyone is alright. In this 6,700-lb tank, I'd be much more worried about the other guy, regardless of fault.

I’m not seeing any crumple zone deformations.

If the wheel and suspension mounts are not ripped out or deformed, this might not be a major repair.

If they are repairing, please force the issue on new wheel, axle and brake components. You don’t want vibrations from ever so slightly bent components!

Best of luck
