For those of you who didn’t get a spare, where did you pick one up?
Dealer, local tire shop?

And is it an 18” or will a 20” actually fit under there?

I wound up finding an OEM 18" steel wheel from an Expedition with the Maxxis Bravo 771n in 265/70r18 116T on eBay. Tires have a date of 32nd week of 2024.

I looked on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Nextdoor but couldn't find any Aluminum 18" or 20" OEM wheels with usable tires under $400 all in, or were listed as a set of 4, etc..

This will go with a set of spare tire cranks and a Tall Boy OffRoad Bottle Jack kit.

I didn't think about Facebook. I found a couple for about $120 that look pretty good.

Do you know if a 20" will fit under the truck? I think if you got the spare when you bought the truck, you get an 18", for some reason.

I just saw a thread on this forum where Old Aviator has a 22" spare under his Platinum, so a 20" should be fine.

A 20 inch wheel with a full-sized tire fits in my spare wheelwell. I know this because I replaced my OEM limited-use spare with a full-sized 20 inch wheel + tire.

BTW - I have my OEM spare wheel + tire listed for sale in the Marketplace section. It's been sitting in the shed since last Fall.

A 22 Platinum wheel also fits. Been there done that!

So if you have to use your spare, you would be running three 20's and an 18? Is that not dangerous?

I do not think the bolded statement above is correct. The bolding is mine.

My 2023 spare is a 20 inch diameter, not-full-width limited-use tire. Its diameter matches the 20 inch OEM wheels' diameter.

Ah ok - good to know. I did look under there at mine but really didn't pay much attention to the size. I assumed it would be the same diameter but would likely be the narrow space-saving ones.

I learned from some pretty wise folks on the Mach E Forum back when I had the Mustang Mach E, that (especially on the all-wheel-drive models), EVs pretty much must have spare wheels the same diameter as their normal OEM wheels, because the wheel half shafts go directly into the electric motor(s) and not into a limited-slip differential like on cars we all grew up with. And thus, one wheel with a diameter different from the other wheel's diameter will pretty much reduce the electric motor in between them to smoking trash within a few miles.

Hence, Ford's solution as a "full-diameter, not-full-width, limited use" spare wheel and tire for the Lightning, imho.

Over on the Mach E Forum, there were several of us who bought a full-size, half-width spare wheel from an outfit called Modern Spare precisely to prevent that scenario.

All the more reason I think to invest into a real matching fifth OEM wheel + tire as the spare. I already used my spare twice.
