- F-150 Lightning, Tesla MY
I replaced a diesel Ram 2500 with the Lightning. The Lightning has better performance in all aspects (except towing range). I do tow long distances, but I have time, so it works for my situation. I have done the math many times and the Lightning is about 1/2 the cost to operate exclusively on DCFCing when diesel prices approach $6/gal. Given that 80% of my operations are not DCFCing, but charging from home—the cost savings just for fuel are significant. Throw in the maintenance costs of a diesel and the savings are massive. So far, with 4 yrs and 112,000 miles on my Lightning I’ve spent $100 on maintenance (not counting tires and windshield wipers). I would have spent that on one oil change for the Ram. And to be fair, the $100 was a deductible on my extended warranty plan that another dealer told me should’ve been covered by my manufacturer battery warranty, so that should’ve been $0 on maintenance in 112,000 miles! Now all warranties are expired, so I’m praying that God continues to bless me, but this vehicle has already far exceeded my expectations. Thanks all, good discussion in here. So far as travel costs, I don't really worry about it anymore since everything costs so much more these days. I have a feeling if I truly added up what I paid for ~650 miles of fast charging (plus the "free" cost to have a 100% battery before leaving using solar panels at home), it would compare to a gas F-150 even with the ridiculous cost of fuel these days. Anecdotally, I estimate an average of $30 a fast charge session, so maybe about $400 for the round trip including tolls? The latter alone is close to $50 one way...
Doing the legit math I think would actually be comparable, but since we don't do a lot of long trips, usually charge from home, and considering the superior driving experience of electric, "savings" has never been a real big part of the EV experience for me.
