    Have you looked into solar and batteries? We have solar and batteries (Powerwalls) and do not buy electricity much of the year. Many months the electric bill has dropped from upwards of $600/mo. to $15-20/mo. In SF East Bay on sucky PG&E (another reason to have batteries!).

    The only time I have heard of that type of backup is on a heat pump. Not on a natural gas unit with their 80,000 to 130,000 BTU capability.
