MacRumors is reporting that iOS 17.4 - now in beta for a likely March release - includes eight new CarPlay apps:

It is not clear whether these apps will require next-gen CarPlay 2 - due for release later in 2024 - or will work in "classic" CarPlay.

While some of us would like Ford and Apple to simply fix CarPlay's flakiness in the Lightning, these additional apps would be handy even when they duplicate functions in the native Ford software.

Side note: I've been using the recently upgraded Apple Maps with EV routing in my Lightning, and quite frankly, I am impressed with its predictive accuracy when it comes to range and SoC at arrival. It does a better job than Ford's GOM.

I think GM is making a major mistake by NOT putting CarPlay (and for that matter, Android Auto) in its future vehicles. GM software is even worse than Ford's, but at least Ford knows it can improve the driver experience by letting Apple do some of the work. The only OEM whose native EV software is so good it can forego CarPlay is Tesla.

It sounds like Apple is just trying to close gaps that the Ford and their app do very poorly.

If the manufactures would pay attention, there is one and only reason that CarPlay and AA exist and that is because the manufactures (as usual) slept too long and deliver abysmal integration and control.

I've come to like and use CarPlay in the Lightning simply because Ford is so bad. However I miss my Tesla every time I get in to drive when it comes to interface, accuracy, speed and integration. If I went back to a Tesla I would never for 2 seconds miss CarPlay or ever hope to use it again. It simply isn't necessary because you have what you need, integrated.

We are the complete opposite. Every time I get back into the Tesla I miss CarPlay, so much so that I bought a Chinese module to put CarPlay on my Tesla.

I mean unless I am missing something, you still can’t answer group text on Tesla, it replies to the individual who wrote the message in the group.

Not sure what flakiness you're experiencing, but connecting with a USB-C to Lightning cable has made CarPlay a very solid experience for me. The exception is that on rare occurances the car fails to communicate GPS data, but flipping to the in-car nav app and back to carplay tends to resolve that.

CarPlay instability is a VERY frequent topic on this forum. I use a USB-C to Lightning cable with my iPhone and it still flakes-out. It is hard to know if it’s a Ford or Apple problem.

I'm perfectly happy letting the software experts handle the software. Automotive electronics integration has *always* been terrible, nearly across the board. I wouldn't think twice about paying Apple another grand to take over all of the electronics integration in my car.
