I don't think it's just the auto tailgate, I think it's any tailgate. I don't have the auto tailgate on mine, and I have to shut the tailgate first, then the Truxedo X15 Pro last. Same exact setup as you, 21 Lariat with short bed, just no auto open/close.

I think they all fold, but on 2021, you had to have Lariat and above to get power folding. XLT was manual. That was one of the big things for me because I have to have folded mirrors to fit into my garage. Manual folding was a hard no.
