The first point above may be at least part of my issue. I am a battery longevity FREAK with my phone so I always close all apps every time I use the phone. I just checked and when you close Fordpass (not just go "home" but actually close it) the app is DEAD. There is no android service started...

Thanks for your help @Jesse-Infotainment , I was able to work with the dealer I bought the original kit from and exchange it for the correct one you mentioned above. Note that the "consequences" were that sometimes on start up I'd get a TRM fault message with the incorrect module.
