My experience has been you want the blue charging lights to turn white or off before unplugging. You can do this by hitting the unluck button as your described, or by stopping the charge from the Chargers App or touchscreen.

Highly recommend PlugShare app. East of I 95 is sparse when it comes to DC charging. I definitely recommend having a plan to level 2 or level 1 charge overnight wherever you are staying at if possible.
