OK, so I don't know how/when various software implemented various functions, but, here's how it appears to work on my 22 Lariat with Android Auto on a Samsung S22 Ultra.
Google Maps is blindly using the car GPS information no matter what.
Waze is interesting, I'm not sure how they implemented it, but they seem to use a "BS filter", so if the car GPS deviates too much from the phone gps, it will use the phone, but if they're relatively close it'll use the car gps.
This explains why it was all over the place in the past (because it kept jumping between phone and car gps).
I'm still having issues with the car gps, if you drive in a straight line long enough (a mile or so) it'll probably lock in on the road you're on, but make a turn and the car-gps will happily move on straight ahead, fields and lakes be damned.
I edited the picture to show the actual route, pardon the red squiggly lines (the dotted black line is the GPS / cookie crumble route), but 696/96 to Novi road, to a strip mall, stripp mall back on Novi road and Novi road to 12mile. They're all normal turns and not U-turns / Michigan lefts.
I also tried putting back the OEM whip antenna, but nothing changed.
