The most I expect to tow is a utility trailer for hauling things from home or a building supply.

This cable was in a bag in my door pocket from when I bough the truck last June. The dealer guy never mentioned it. I looked up the part number and it seems to be an adapter cable for after market electric trailer controller.

#1, when would I need it?

#2 the instructions are minimal where does it even get installed?

You would need this cable to install an aftermarket brake controller. Brake controllers are needed when trailers have brakes that get activated by the truck. U-Haul trailers have SURGE brakes, which get activated when the trailer's tongue gets pushed by the truck slowing. Travel trailers, boat trailers over a certain weight, and work trailers generally have brakes that need a brake controller in your truck. Each state has minimum requirements for trailers, many are 3,000 pounds. You can Google for your state's requirements.

You won’t need it for a utility trailer.
Even if you rent a skid steer (like a bobcat) the rental places here in Ohio rent you a trailer with surge brakes, so no brake controller needed.

Thanks. That’s how I plan to use it for now. I.e. renting a trencher, skid steeer auger, etc.
