One year in our small town our old city night marshall/watchman drove around town about 10 mph in the city pickup. We didn't have a police car and the marshall did a lot of maintenance work as well. The night marshall was an old retired guy who was just there from 7 to 10 pm just for fire watch and to keep an eye on the water tower to see when it is full so he could drive out and shut off the city well pump.

One night my two cousins and I decided to run up behind him in the dark and climb in the pickup as he puttered down the street. Two of us got in but one cousin sat with feet on the bumper and hanging on to the top of the tailgate. After driving a block the tailgate popped open and he landed flat on his back on the gravel street. Then we just cracked up laughing and laughing so loud that the night marshall heard us and stopped and yelled what are you guys doing back there? We just jumped out and took off. The one in the road slowly collected himself, got up, and took off too.

The night marshall just drove on like it was a typical night in small town Kansas in the 60s. We laughed for a long time afterwards. I still laugh thinking about it. It was a quiet night and the noise of that tailgate releasing just after I climbed in with him flat on his back in the road and the groaning as he lay there in the gravel street that he letting out at the same time since he was bigger and heavier than us all the while happening in a split second and no time to react.
