Our final family road trip with the OG SR Lightning before it died. Part 1 kicks off our journey from the Bay Area on our way to Phoenix, Sedona, and the Grand Canyon to come in a later video. This EV adventure was unforgettable.

I used A Better Route Planner for most of the trip. For the 3rd video I try using Apple EV Route Planning on my way home and doing exactly what it says and the results were not great. Stay tuned for that video later next week!

Fun trip. I’ve done it a couple of times now and will be doing another one in a few weeks. This will be NAZ to Seattle down the coasts of WA, OR, and CA then back to NAZ (~3300 miles).

I’m curious about your decision to go up I-15 after Barstow to the Yermo supercharger instead of 3 miles south on the 15 to the Supercharger in Barstow. Yermo is quite a but farther out of the way than the small amount of backtracking it would take to get to the Barstow SC. Was that a suggestion by ABRP?

Yeah ABRP sent me there which was odd because the original plan I made in the app should have had me stop in Barstow. I’m not sure why it rerouted me. I did end up in Needles with only 10 miles of range left so not sure if Yermo was somehow closer or different wind and it thought I wouldn’t make it from Barstow? Wait til you see the video of where Apple EV Route planning sent me šŸ˜†

I gave up on ABRP when it started sending me off in weird places when I knew the route it was suggesting was less than optimal—if I can’t trust it when I’m familiar with the route, I don’t think I can trust it when I’m unfamiliar with the route. The EA chargers (8 posts) in Barstow were even less out-of-the-way, but they are often way overcommitted. You would have saved 6+ miles by stopping there, but if it was busy it wouldn’t have been worth it.

Google is sometimes 10-20% overly pessimistic…which, fine, it’s better than overly optimistic. But still. That can cause lots of wasted time and stress.

None of the mapping algorithms seem to have figured out ā€œidealā€ routing yet.

I Absolutely agree! I’ve heard some positive feedback about Google but having an iPhone I haven’t been able to try it. Apple keeps planning for me to arrive with 20% SOC to a charger so that makes me crazy and it also doesn’t tell you where the heck it’s sending you. None of put it all together yet unfortunately

When we really need a charger with known capabilities, etc., we use the built-in navigation by Ford. The Chargers search option filters out all the garbage and make it much easier to find the one we need. But it’s not the best for long-distance navigation.
