I have 2 units. Rear camera is independent from front camera.
I understand, but you said " Why bother running a cable". You have two independent cameras instead of running a cable (to the front camera). You still need to run a cable somewhere, to power the rear camera, so instead of running a power cable to the cigarette lighter like you did, I run it a bit further to the main unit. At the end of the day, we both have to run some kind of a cable, somehow, to the rear unit :)

Like Skier167 I ran mine down under the headliner, down the A-pillar BEHIND the airbag, then down the footwells in the door sill trim then back up the C pillar. Yeah it's not centered on the rear window but it stayed away from the side curtain airbags. Since I've been in a crash where those have deployed I keep all wires away from that area.... If you have the sliding rear window my route will keep the cam away from that anyway so it's a win win
