I'm afraid it's not worth it just for a few shortcuts. Especially when if Ford would just stop being dumb and give owners the ability to customize screens in their own truck.

All in you'd be looking at close to $1000 in hardware just to have shortcuts, Plus have to use CarScanner with a permanent MagicBox type device, it's not worth it unless you're doing something worthwile like EverDrive.

This is what I built the ECU out of: https://phytools.com/products/pcan-router-fd-w-phoenix-connector I will be publishing the Extended PID and Action PID software soon, but unless you're a programmer and handy with DIY hardware I don't see the economics for a few shortcuts.

Is there something special about that PCAN or is it just a convenient breakout of the NXP LPC4078 meant for industry where $450 isn't worth a second thought?

As far as I can tell, peaking the PCB in the user manual, it's the MCU, a SPI flash chip, and likely a USB/UART chip or the like

Yea, it is way overpriced but comes with a CAN bootloader what is compatible with Ford's CAN network. I can push updates in the vehicle in 15sec. That has been invaluable for development. In the future, depending on how many of these we sell, I may switch to something way cheaper or build my own PCB.

Ahh, I guess you can program the PCAN directly over the Lighting's CAN?

I'd be somewhat confident in using an off the shelf micro and programming it via UART or whatever while it's hooked up to the can bus and I'm sitting in my driveway, and letting the system freak out for a moment while it's flashing (or jerry rig a simple bypass to limit interruption time). Although I guess the PCAN will handle message pass through right out of the box and while flashing?

Yes, and PEAK (since they make lots of professional CAN tools) made the bootloader/firmware flash tool where it works right through Ford's OBD2 gateway module so you don't need to even access the router really to update it. It's one step away from even being compatible with FDRS/FORScan. This is actually a goal of mine, to re-write the bootloader to accept firmware straight from FORScan. But getting FORScan to play nice with modules it's not programmed to recognize would also be an issue, my module shows up in FORScan when it scans b/c I've programmed it to respond to the standard Mode 01 PID 0 request, but FORScan doesn't allow MFU or any other features b/c it doesn't have any knowledge of my module.
