I’m with you on the 6.5-foot bed. I’m crazy enough to be planning to tow a fifth wheel with the Lightning and I’d appreciate the extra length.
I think it’s a real possibility for the second generation Lightning in a few years. I just doubt that Ford’s going to put in the extra engineering...
Fifth wheel hitch rails are attached to the frame. The rails are thick steel channels that the hitch then attaches to. The bed has little strength itself, which is why I’m comfortable leaving the centre bolts off since they only go through the sheet metal.
Honestly I think the market for fifth...
If one estimates 50% range loss for planning purposes they shouldn’t be disappointed. Obviously your mileage may vary just like it always does.
Towing my fifth wheel with an ICE F-150 results in 50% range loss. With the Lightning, regen may offer some benefit but I’m not counting on it.
Here are the eSourceBook specifications for the F-150 Lightning for your reading enjoyment.

There are definitely people who could genuinely use 600 miles of range. But I’m sure once EVs get there, a subset of the population will be saying they’ll get an EV just as soon as they have 800 miles of range….
Good news: The holes for the eight bolts that attach to the frame brackets are outside Ford’s “do not drill” areas.
The two centre bolts *are* in the no-drill area. These bolts just go through the sheet metal, and as I understand it are primarily to support the rails under the stresses of a...
Here’s the Body Builders Layout Book for the 2022 F-150, now including data for the Lightning. Has dimensional data, curb weights, load ratings, etc.

Once people get their trucks the forum will be flooded with people complaining/asking why their range estimator doesn’t read EXACTLY 230/300/320 miles. “Is there something wrong with my truck?”
What Ford has confirmed to a reviewer is that 1000 pounds of cargo and passengers won’t significantly affect range one way or another. That’s all.
The rest was speculation.
I hear this too. They’re up to 1000 km now. This is one of the moving goalposts. First they wanted 200 miles of range. Then we got that. Then they wanted 400 miles, okay we’re getting there too. Now it’s 600 miles….
I think a lot of pickup trucks are bought based on what people think they need...
As someone who works in the power industry (although not in generation or transmission) this one just makes me shake my head. Trust me the utilities know how to plan for additional loads and the grid will be just fine as EVs are gradually adopted.
Remember all the concern that the grid...
A lot of truck people are pragmatic. When I talk to people about the Lightning they just want to know range, towing and price. The price of gas has really opened people’s eyes to alternatives.
But I’ve been answering people’s questions for ten years about my Volt and more recently Pacifica...
I picked the XLT because I’m trying to keep the weight down for towing purposes. To that end I don’t want the sunroof (64 lbs) or many features. No 45-lb bedliner. I wouldn’t get the tailgate step (46 pounds) either but that’s forced.
I could go to extremes and get the SR to save even more...
