Hello all. New to the this forum as I just picked up my 22 Lariat a little over a week ago. Previously I had an older ICE Limited F-150, so I was very used to power running boards. Was sad to see that no level of Lightning came with them.
Because I damn near emptied the bank account putting the biggest deposit I could manage to keep the payments low, there wasn't a ton of money left over for initial mods. That said, the power running boards were a must if my elderly parents were ever going to climb in and out the truck. Note to self... NEVER stop resistance training, even when ya get old- the literally couldn't pull themselves up into the cab with the standard fixed running boards. Anyway, due mostly to financial considerations, I went with the High Country brand as they were $1,200 Vs the AMP brand at ~$1,850. I had neither the time nor inclination to attempt a self install, but my local truck shop put them in for just $375 (3 hours), which felt like a good deal after 2 other local shops quoted me 4-5 hours.
Overall, I'd say the quality seems pretty good. Time will tell, but for now they are perfect. I really like the rubber-type, non-slip coating they have Vs my old truck, which were grooved metal to help with the wet, but could still sometimes feel not very non-slip. The one negative I'd say, and this is really nit-picky, is that when they deploy and fold back up, the motors make a mechanical whine. My previous ones were silent. Makes me wonder if the AMP ones are quiet. Even if so, still not worth the extra $650 to me just to have them run silently.
I will say that the step seems kinda low when deployed. My folks will love that. For me, it's something to adjust to over time. After thinking about it a few days, I realized that perception likely arises from the fact that my other truck simply sat higher. It had 22 inch wheels stock and even beyond that, it just felt higher in general. This truck sits a little lower, likely for aero/efficiency purposes, and has the 20 inch wheels. But yeah, when lowered, the step is closer to the ground than I am used to.
Otherwise, it's a nice piece of kit, as my old Brit buddies overseas might say. It even came with LED lights that turn on when they are deployed. The plan is to cover those lights with a blue film to create a blue light effect at night when the doors are opened. My truck (Luna) is black, and I am going through the efforts to mix in some more blue highlights in the next week or two as the black can look a little drab with it's dark grey... well... everything else (grille, wheels, etc). Will post a pic soon.
