what's with the splitter? the MX+ connects via bluetooth

It splits the OBD into two plugs, so I can run two OBD dongles.

I get that but with the OBlink M+ being bluetooth, why two dongles. Today I connected with my phone and my chromebook simultaneously. I haven't tried it but will in the next couple days connect to the OBDlink app and Car Scanner at the same time.

ABRP only uses the BLE Bluetooth. The BLE will also work on Carscanner, but it's not as fast or reliable as the MX+. I run both apps on the same phone at the same time, but the best reliability for me comes from running both OBD dongles simultaneously. Each OBD is Bluetooth, but they are different Bluetooth protocols.

I've had "issues" updating software / tinkering with FDRS while also having an OBD2 adapter plugged in.

So I went "backwards" and pulled the Y-split harness in favor of a either/or extension.

So I went "backwards" and pulled the Y-split harness in favor of a either/or extension.

I don't use the splitter during FDRS or Forscan programming, that seems way too risky. Reading data for apps is a different animal, and I do that frequently.
