Soon to have a lightning and I have been scouring the internet and YT on a step by step guide for charging the lightning. I know the basics about plugging and unplugging but I have seen people talk about bricking an EA charger if you plug it in and initiate a session after, versus initiating a session and then plugging it in. What really controls the charging of the truck? Is it app based or all done on the sync screen? Can I set the truck to stop at a certain SOC% on a public L2 charger, such as at my job site, without physically going to the vehicle and disconnecting it? Thanks y'all.

A bunch of different questions.

If you charge at EA, you first want to use your 250kWh of free charging, which requires either Plug and Charge or using FordPass.

I have never heard of bricking an EA charger.

If you plug in first, it will try and use Plug and Charge. If that's turned off, then you can activate it via FordPass or EA's app. If you initiate a session with FordPass or EA's app, or Charge Assist (in vehicle), you then plug in. All work fine.

The charging at a public charger is controlled by that charging network. Only EA locations use Plug and Charge, and that goes to your Ford account.

You can set a limit at any level 2 charger AFTER you first charge there for a few minutes. Save, then set hours and limits. If it's a public charger, you should then MOVE the vehicle for the next person. Leaving it sit while not charging is in poor taste, and may be a towable / ticketing offense.

The only thing Rick didn’t touch on is the FordPass vs Sync question. Charge settings can be made either place, but it’s what’s stored in the truck that rules. Some people have had problems with FordPass settings getting downloaded to the truck. I make my settings in the truck.

Thanks for your reply. I read somewhere Plug and Charge has a tacked on price over what EA charges? Also, how is the limit on a L2 charger set, through the app or sync screen? As for the charging etiquette, its not a public charger.

Plug & Charge uses the same basic rate as EA. However, if you sign up for EA pass plus, you get a discounted rate that’s not available vis P&C. Ford tried a program to get the discounted rate using P&C, but discontinued it after having problems. Hopefully, the get it worked out.

See post 3 for app vs Sync.

L2 - a bit more detail since this will be most of your charging.
For the most part, you are pugging into your L2 charger at home and/or work and you set up a location profile for each location
  1. Plug into the unknown charger - default SOC target will be 100%
  2. Set up your location profile by setting the upper SOC value and the charge window for that location in either the truck's Charging app or the FordPass app. (eg. Home, SOC target 80%, charge window 7pm-7am )
  3. Repeat for your regular locations - You must plug in first to be able to set it up (eg. Work, SOC target 95%, charge window anytime)
For transient locations, you can set a one-time SOC limit in the Charging app once you plug in. I do this for locations like hotels where I don't want to set up a location profile and don't want to charge to the default 100%. You have to do this every time you plug into a charger with no location profile unless you want to charge to 100%.

If you are charging and decide at dinner that you need more power for your next trip, you can tell the truck to charge to 100% in the FordPass app and it will bypass the location settings and top you up. This is a very convenient feature as your plans change.

Fast Charging
This is a bit more mysterious. RickLightning and Marquis covered this. I will add that each charging network has its own process/app. If it is part of the FordOval network, you can activate it through the FordPass App if the connection is working. If not, you will need the charging network-specific app or a credit card to start the charger. I'm in Canada and 95% of the time, I need to use the network-specific app since the BlueOval network doesn't work hardly ever here.
