Ontario Licence plate renewal fee

Hey folks, has any one in Ontario gotten a letter from service Ontario to renew license plate with. $265 fee?

I looked this up and all I see is that plates are free to renew how ever this is a chart that shows a fee of $265 for commercial vehicles that weigh 3000kg or more.

Il have to stop at a service ontario and inquire about this letter.

When I got the truck a year ago, the Service Ontario agent informed me I could get the GV plates and they cost the same as regular truck plates, with free annual renewal and you can use HOV lanes even if alone in the truck - assuming your in the south where they have HOV lanes...

shows a fee of $265 for commercial vehicles

If your truck is personal use and green plated there is no renewal fee.

If your truck is business owned, commercial or farm plated then fees may apply.

You can use the online portal or go to a service Ontario centre to confirm.

Your registration card has the type and weight listed on it.

I'd luv to only pay $265 for tabs. In Michigan the tabs are over $500 to register a LIGHTNING for 12 months/year.

Commercial vehicles
Commercial vehicles with a registered gross weight (RGW) of up to 4,500 kg are eligible to apply for green licence plates.

Annual validation stickers
Vehicles with a registered gross weight (RGW) above 3,000 kg must obtain and display an annual validation sticker on their licence plates. This requirement applies to all commercial vehicles, including those with green plates.

I'd love to understand how that is possible when on my owner ship it says registered weight is 2640kg and if it was registered over 3000kg why didn't service ontario ask me to pay that on my registration when I registered the truck, all I paid was $59 for the plates. When asked this on service Ontario's customer service phone line the couldn't answer that question and recommended a visit to a service ontario store. When I was in the store the gave me the reverse answer. So in conclusion they don't have an answer for me.

surprisingly, it is possible because there is a difference between a commercial vehicle for commercial use and a commercial vehicle for personal use.

The lightning gets rated as a "commercial vehicle" because of its weight but in Ontario all pickups are automatically designated as commercial vehicles under the law regardless of weight.

My lightning has the GV plate but it is registered for personal use, so the fees don't apply and I don't have to get it inspected every year. This 'personal use' is designated clearly on my green slip and there is an orange 'personal use only' sticker stuck to the front plate. My truck is also rated for 'personal use' with my insurer.

But I'm not using my truck to generate income in any way, at all. I' don't use it for my work, I don't use it to physically make extra money (side hustles or whatever), and I don't have any stickers/signs / ads / phone numbers or third party commercial markings on it either..... all of which would likely be considered 'commercial' use by any insurer.

Thanks for all that information. I had it all sorted out with service ontario and I had a debate with them about it because ih have 2 1500 Rams and a 2500 and never had this brought to my attention on those trucks. Best part was he was unsure on how to respond so he said to call customer service number, when I called they told me to ask a employee at service ontario so looks like they aren't really sure of how this works either.

No problem! I had a hard time understanding why they are plating those silly Subaru Baja things with commercial plates.

The weird thing about Service Ontario for me is that no two experiences there are ever the same because some people who work there are more knowledgeable and experienced than others, and some are a lot more patient than others.
