Climbed to the 'top of the world', at least in GEORGIA's highest mountain range today - 3,346' elevation on BELL MOUNTAIN 'lover's leap' in HIAWASSEE GA.

Fortunately, I was the only vehicle on the 'not for the Faint of Heart' very skinny, but paved road, winding hard up to the top... from 1,946' to 3,346' in 2.4 miles.

Used 'OFF ROAD' mode, without locking differential, up, and 'POWER' mode, with 1-pedal, on the way down.

The photos at the top show the very 'top' of Georgia, and the very Western bottom edge of North Carolina, between HIAWASSE/YOUNG HARRIS GA and HAYESVILLE NC

0.5kwh on the way up this STEEP STEEP and WINDING SWITCHBACK skinny, but paved, road. Passing any other vehicle is problematic already, but passing another TRUCK, well, that's going to be a tough task. Better now, early in the a.m., with no one else but a Sherrif's Deputy to escort me up, than next LABOR DAY weekend when not only cars and trucks, but motorcycle groups will be trudging loudly up this mountain path. It will certainly be crazy.

1.8kwh average once reaching the Bottom, for a total of 2.5miles. THIS TRUCK CAN DO ANYTHING! I love it. Thank you FORD!

[OMG! I just realized what song I caught on the screen while at the 'top'! God must be watching...]

...this is also after coming down from Georgia's highest state park and campground this morning, in Mountain City GA, just below the NC border, at 3,600' elevation, WITH the camper. That was also NOT for the faint of heart, since it's road is also hardly wide enough for two Cars, much less two RV's. I was glad the huge 40' motorhome was still in the campground before I arrived last night...meeting him would NOT have been a pleasant experience for both of us.

I left early enough this morning that hardly anybody was up yet...only meet one car on the way down. Nice.

I have never driven an EV. Got some basic questions for you about your Lightning:

How does break pedal work when you have 1 pedal off? Is it all regen until a certain point then friction gradually get added? or it is a blend from the beginning and you are always losing energy to friction? Is max regen still the same on this mode? or you get less regen than 1 pedal? In other words if I get a hang of it, will I still be able to save as much energy as 1 Pedal? Does display tell you when friction is engaged?

When you have 1 pedal on, break pedal is all friction? and you are already at max regen when you start using break pedal?

We took ours to the parking lot near the top of Mount Mitchell in NC last month which is probably around 6000 feet in elevation. We recouped almost all of the energy on our way down which was pretty cool.

Looked like a great trip! Has anyone taken it up pikes peak yet? I did this in a model 3 and it was hilarious to see the regen chart. EVs are great for climbs like this as the brakes aren’t being overworked coming down.

How does br[ake] pedal work when you have 1 pedal off? just like any other

Is it all regen until a certain point then friction gradually get added? yes, in Normal mode without 1-pedal engaged, the regen is happening while you are coasting or slowing, then your own input of the brake pedal starts any friction braking. Other modes, such as towing, will create much more regeneration, so you may not have to use the brakes as often - you can use this mode as the 'in between' mode if you don't like the aggresive 1-pedal mode.

or it is a blend from the beginning and you are always losing energy to friction? sometimes

Is max regen still the same on this mode? sure, you'll always have the ability of 'max' regeneration, but it will take longer to engage in 'Normal' mode, which gives you more coasting time.

or you get less regen than 1 pedal? yes

In other words if I get a hang of it, will I still be able to save as much energy as 1 Pedal? maybe

Does display tell you when friction is engaged? yes, there is a graphic 'sphere' of sorts that will 'open up' when regeneration is happening, and gives a green 'haze' to illuminate the amount

When you have 1 pedal on, break pedal is all friction? braking with the pedal is just like any other vehicle, but you also have regeneration working too - both work together. 1-pedal is a combination of the two, with the TRUCK doing the work, instead of you. Yes, the brake lights WILL come on when the 1-pedal activates the brakes, but that's not always as soon as the regeneration is happening, if it's already slowing you enough. The truck's 1-pedal feature knows WHEN to apply the brakes, if it needs to. When you get back on the 'gas' pedal, it goes back into driving mode smoothly. If you don't do anything, though, 1-pedal will BRING THE VEHICLE TO A COMPLETE STOP.

and you are already at max regen when you start using break pedal? 'max' regeneration is not always going to happen - it depends on speed, terrain, elevation change, and the mode you are in.
(SEE THE ANSWERS ABOVE)

While there is no Regeneration 'setting', to increase or decrease the regeneration, or like on some EVs, a set of 'paddles' on the steering wheel, the Ford LIGHTNING DOES give you options...
DRIVE MODES:
NORMAL - coasting and little regeneration
SPORT - tighter steering wheel, and a little more regeneration
TOWING - much more regeneration, and you can use this even if you are not towing
OFF-ROAD - nearing to the 1-pedal feature, contemplating that you are not at high speeds, but more to control sudden downhill fast movement, etc.

1-Pedal: AGGRESSIVE regeneration AND brake pedal automatic engagement, and to a complete stop.

I appreciate you taking the time to help. Things are much less foggy now. I can't wait to play with modes and different styles of driving to hopefully some day become the Hypermiling champion of the forum. It is a skill that can come in handy traveling through fast charging deserts with a standard range battery. Thanks again.

yes, agreed, and when I took off on this journey this past week, with my camper, I didn't even put any thought into what 'drive mode' I was in, because, actually, it really doesn't matter. The battery and motors are 100% torque from the first milisecond and the drive modes are really more how you want the regeneration and any automated braking to work.
I did change it to TOW MODE after the first 100 miles, and saw no difference in miles/kwh, but did feel more regeneration/slowing of the truck when letting off the pedal, which is nice if you want better 'control' while towing. Since there's no transmission, though, there is no other 'change' that occurs in TOW MODE.
I found that SPORT MODE made the steering wheel feel tighter, and more 'firm', and the regen more pronounced, almost as if you want the truck to feel more like a engine-based machine.

I drove up Pikes Peak last year in a Wrangler. A big truck would make me more nervous I think 😬. Any issues with the regenerative braking components overheating like brakes do on the way down?

It was as cool as a cucumber. We had a lot of fun driving the Turo model 3 around Denver and Colorado Springs last year. We’ve done pikes peak in a hubrid Avalon back in 2018 and it did a great job as well. Both Turo rentals.

Well, you've already taken care of the NH one. But if I ever get mine, I'll be taking it to FL and I think there may be a 50' hill somewhere nearby ;-). Or perhaps the peak of the Tampa Bay bridge.

HAHAHAHA. So true. I just checked, the highest point in Florida is 345 feet. Still has to be done brother!

We can do this.

...another several hundred miles across N Georgia, NC, TN, and now down into the Huntsville AL area, right below the TN border... camping the last several nights, charging at each campground, and now at my son's RV..plugged into 50amp 240v service for charging.... it's all WORKING as planned.

Now, I just need to figure out a few things about ProPower:

A) why does ProPower shut down when you turn off the truck, rather than having a 'pause' for a certain length of time, or if the owner wishes, to REMAIN ON even then? Not a biggy, but FORD, please provide an update where WE owners can choose to keep ProPower operational EVEN IF we want to turn the truck 'OFF'. @Ford Motor Company

B) why does ProPower shut off when the Level2 charging reaches 100%? I get that charging is 'complete', but why would that effect ProPower, especially if the truck has remained ON for all that time? FORD, allow ProPower to not to be affected by charging - last night at 11:30 my camper, powered by ProPower while the truck was charging, suddenly 'shut off', at the same moment my Ford Pass App sent me a 'Charging Complete' message. I don't understand the correlation between the two. @Ford Motor Company

Fun, and not real 'biggies', just little annoyances. These are customized settings we need to have.
