I see a lot of new opportunity for charging stations like this. Add a few small businesses around (nail salon, a small bar, deli, sandwich shop - maybe a small business center) and people can make good use of the time they are stuck at these stations

Hopfully this is just the beginning of charging war. Any business that is not close to one will be out.

Fake news! I've only gotten sick, at most, 12 times after eating at Subway. And I hate kids so it's at least a 50% win.
But then you'll be spending hours in a confined space with freshly infected kids.
In all seriousness, this is promising to see a "restaurant" comitting to this. You can only hang out at Walmarts for so long.
Including Walmarts with a Subway inside?
A perfect DC fast charger station has access to a convenience store, a dog walk area, and a fast casual dinning experience. Once those are in place, we're golden.
I'd also want a pull thru charging station. Just so all the people towing trailers don't clog up the whole place.

With the exception of the bar, I am assuming you really are thinking about a truck stop, not a suburban ptomaine palace.

On a highway, sure. Installing DCFC in suburbia is a waste of resources.

I agree that American roads need to have a dense and reliable coverage and should have priority but I live in suburbia and already see charges from 7KW to 350KW (not all DCFC) in front of all kinds of businesses anywhere from Trader Joe’s to Walmart.

My understanding is that gas stations use gas to sell junk food. When gas is replaced with electrons, that business model will still work. When there is concentration of businesses cost can be shared to have the edge over locations without chargers.

If you are thinking no one charges publicly in their own neighborhood, people with ID4s do. My cousin just got a beemer with a ton of free charging and he is already bookmarking preferred nearby chargers. Guess what, they are all near a bunch of businesses. Besides, your suburbia could be someone else’s travel destination.

It may be a waste but when was the last time that stoped a trend.

For those of us without a ton of free charging, installing a charging station at home pays for itself in under 2 years over DCFC. That's if you have a relatively high cost of electricity in your home. For the business, it's at least a 6 figure investment per plug, which apparently requires a lot of servicing. God only knows how long the payback period is.

L2 chargers are a little different (much less expensive to install), but they only make sense for businesses where you're going to spend a couple of hours like restaurants or movie theaters or malls. 10-15 minutes charging at Trader Joe's or Walmart isn't going be all that useful. Trying to make money on junk food would be pretty hard.

If you need to charge at your destination, hotels are a perfect place to install L2 chargers. However, the real dire need for DCFC is on a highway. More locations and more plugs per location.
