My dealer wouldn't do the POS credit, but I wouldn't leave until I had IRS Form 15400 in my hand proving the sale was properly reported for me to get my credit when I filed (which I did successfully). I didn't even have to push for it, I may have mentioned the credit to them, but the manager submitted the sale while I was doing other paperwork. He even printed out screenshots of the IRS portal at each stage to show that he did it right. Mine was only the second time he's done it (very small dealer) but he was already set up and familiar with how to do it. He said he pays attention to all the emails he gets from Ford.

So if you can't get the credit POS, I think it's acceptable to leave with Form 15400 since there's little chance you won't get the credit at tax time.
Agreed, I'm certain you should be fine to claim the credit later when you file your 1040 for tax year 2025!!

If a dealer is NOT participating with the sales reporting process ie. securing a legal Form 15400, that one should also walk away.

I missed out on mine. I don't think that dealer registered the truck with the IRS or maybe they took the credit for themselves. For some reason our taxes were a nightmare this year and by the time it was kicked back, I was all out of energy from dealing with it all and just wanted it to be done. When I purchased the truck last year I did not realize that I needed a form from the dealership or otherwise I would have ensure that I had it before I walked out.
After all the 'other' problems have settled, try again to secure the 15400, if you can submit an amended return to secure the credit, you have 3 years to amend a tax return.

100% agree. I bought my truck last year and I had no problem getting the credit when I filed my 2024 taxes.

I've been telling people that if they don't get the POS credit do NOT leave without that form. Do not trust the dealer to do it within the next three days (as required). I've seen too many horror stories online.

Of course this will all be a moot point soon.
