Farley just was noted as saying how far ahead Tesla and China for EVs. Might mean that Ford is going to go further into EV design and production.

This back and forth flip flopping in the media is not helping Ford in any way. Farley just needs to keep his mouth shut and do a lot more doing than talking about they need to do it. The EV part of the lightning is not that bad. He needs to show that they can get the software right and have the capability to do timely updates to everyone.

I took a chance on Fords 1st go at EV's believing they would eventually make things right via updates. The verdict is still out on if they are going to do that. I see some progress but then see these flip flop talks and lose hope. The one thing that won't change is that if my lightning does not get the features I was promised by my dealer (pro power with truck off) and some refinement on all the dumb quirks that people have been complaining about for years, I will not take a chance again on Ford's next go around.

Worldwide EV and PHEV sales compared to ICE new car sales:
various results from 1 in 4 (25%) to 1 in 3 (33%) worldwide. All indications are increasing percentage of all cars sold are EV's by year and by quarter.

This is a huge contrast to N.American EV and PHEV sales which appear to run about 8-11% approximately, and yes California/BC/Quebec have far higher EV/PHEV sales, close to the worldwide average of 25-33 %.

A major auto manufacturer can't afford to ignore this big a market segment.
Looking at the investment Ford is making in the new Universal EV Platform, it appears they are not ignoring the market, just trying to keep up and reduce costs.

I honestly do wonder if Ford could have saved more cost buy using g the exact same body as ICE, with maybe 2 fenders changed, one to remove gas door and one to add electric door.

As an actual Ford stockholder, and as someone who has overseen the design and engineering of a specialized EV, I disagree with just about everything in this comment.

i’m in the middle of my 16th EV road trip of more than 1500 miles. So I cannot fathom what you mean when you say that the truck isn’t suitable for long distance travel. In fact, it is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever driven cross country. And if this is an oblique reference to the state of US charging infrastructure, you need to get out more. By the end of this year, I will have charged in 18 states from Florida to California, and even though I own a standard range Pro, there is nowhere I haven’t been able to go.

As for common content with the ICE F-150, over 30% of the parts are the same. Body components are not what drives the cost. What Farley and other legacy execs are waking up to is that in order to make cost competitive EVs, you must radically change the engineering and the manufacturing process. So the answer is not more commonality with the gas powered versions, it’s less. Like zero.

In my view, the Lighting is the most successful EV truck because of how much it shares with its ICE counterpart. Decades of ICE dominance know-how were baked into the Lightning from its inception. The ICE/EV design overlap is advantageous for both consumers and for Ford. The next phase for Ford though is “born EV” platforms. A full sized pickup EV as a “born EV” platform will take more time to develop. So they’ll start smaller with the born EV Fords. Can we still expect Ford to produce the Lightning until that day comes? If battery costs continue to decline I don’t see why not.

I agree, had a RST Silverado EV and it was no where as comfortable ride quality as the Lightning. Only plus with Silverado is 450 mile range, but charging a over 200 KW battery takes a long time...

Ford has already started with a ground-up EV car, with design and pretty good sales of the pretty successful Mach E Mustang, a ground-up EV platform which I had the great pleasure of pretty much driving into the ground (this is meant as a compliment to that car).

Had a Mach e loaner/rental once. Agree it’s really nice. Just a bit too small for our needs though since we haul kids and stuff everywhere.
