Thought I’d share my experience with Hankook’s new iON HTs for the EV tire curious.
[disclaimers: several months ago I swapped out the Lariat’s OEM Hankook Dynapros on 20” wheels with 18” Tremor take-offs and the General Grabbers. So my recollection of driving on the Dynapros may have faded with time. While the Tremor take-offs were very F150, they took some of the Lightning out of the truck…at least the way I drive it. Related: yes I have some Tremor wheels for sale.]
First thing to note is the driving experience. They feel similar to the Dynapros in that they’re a good street & highway tire. It was nice to get the Lightning feel back after come from ATs! I pushed them in acceleration, braking & cornering, and have no complaints, at least while they’re brand new. While they certainly aren’t noisy, there is a 800-1200Hz hum that is slightly noticeable above 45mph if you listen for it. Wind noise becomes the loudest sound above 55 so no worries there.
Longevity was my next concern after experiencing the disappointed uneven wear with the OEM Hankooks. Only time will tell but I feel better with the 80,000 mile warranty.
Not everyone is worried about the effect on range, but it’s worth sharing with the rest of the data:
I saw 2.5 mi/kWh while driving my regular commute & errands around home. Most of my daily drive is 55mph on a rural highway with few stoplights, but closer to home is typical suburban starts and stops. To be fair, this was during ideal EV conditions: Dallas weather was between 60-80°.
Cost and availability: I prefer Discount Tire over another trip to the Ford dealership. The iON HTs weren’t even in their computer inventory, but the staff called the warehouse and had them shipped to store in two days. And they matched NTB’s $222.99 price, plus Hankook has a $100 mail-in rebate thru Nov 30.
Looks are a taste issue:
While they don’t look as great as the Tremor wheels & General Grabbers, they do look a little more “aggressive” than the Dynapros. Nothing that’s going to turn heads unless you’re an EV tire nerd.
In a sentence, they check the boxes for price and performance. And hopefully they stay in good shape for more than 22k miles
