Hi all, I wanted to provide an update on the Rear ABS Fault in case anyone else encounters this issue.

After the dealership quoted me $250 just to "take a look at it", I decided to take matters into my own hands.

With the help of a friend who'se an Army Mechanic, I pulled the wheel off and inspected the ABS wire harness. After seeing no visible damage to the wire, we removed the ABS sensor from the right rear wheel. The sensor itself looked intact but it did have a lot of dirt/dust buildup. We cleaned it using isopropyl alcohol.

Then I took a look in the hole where the sensor goes and found a lot of gunk and buildup (looked like a combination of brake dust, rust flakes, and road debris). On my truck it was bad enough that it was partially blocking the sensor’s view of the tone ring.

Here’s what I did:

• Cleaned the tone ring with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and a rag/q-tip. Basically we sprayed and spun, sprayed and spun to get around the entire wheel twice.
• Cleaned the sensor tip as well (it had debris stuck to the magnet).
• Reinstalled everything, making sure the sensor sat flush.
• Cleared the DTCs in FORScan.

Side note: I was shocked to see how small the rear brakes are on a truck this size.

Since then, I’ve repeated the same drive that was consistently triggering the fault before, and the error has not come back. It’s been holding steady so far even in hot temps.

So if anyone else runs into a random rear ABS sensor code on the Lightning, it might be worth pulling the sensor and cleaning the bore/tone ring area before replacing parts.
