I thought the FCSP wouldn't start a charge if the vehicle doesn't support CCS signaling, so some older cars with J1772 ports were not compatible. Is this wrong?
The FCSP uses L2 J1772 for charging it cannot charge using the DC pins - it only uses the DC pins for the HIS (Home Integration System) to access the HV battery to power a home - when it works which is not very often from what the posts say about the HIS.

CCS1 incorporates the J1772 for L2 charging.

This is the CCS1 pin out:

Ford F-150 Lightning Charging a Tesla with FCSP CCS1 pin out

Combined Charging System combo 1 (CCS1) connector: builds on the J1772 standard adding two additional pins for DC fast charging up to 350 kW - this was what the power limit was when I copied the info however it depends on the DC fast charger and the capability of the vehicle.

Removing a chunk of plastic that is preventing an adapter from being used on a poorly designed plug is I suppose a “hack.” I would call it an engineering correction. 😊
Maybe it was a hack - I used a hack saw for some of the cutting after all!

The word "hack" has multiple origins, primarily from the Old English "haccian" (to chop roughly) and from "hackney" (a hired horse), leading to meanings like cutting wood, undistinguished work (hack writer), and, famously at MIT, clever, unconventional problem-solving in technology, evolving into the modern computer "hacker" sense, encompassing both ingenious solutions and malicious intrusion.

Apparently. A 2012 Nissan Leaf definitely doesn't support CCS signalling.

You probably mis-heard, or somebody mis-stated. The car DOES need to have a CCS1 port (without an adapter like this), so I'm guessing that's where the confusion happened.

I got an AZ J1772 to J1772 extension cord and notched it so it would fit the CCS1 so I could use the FCSP to charge any J1772 ported vehicle - tested it on my 2012 Nissan Leaf works perfectly.

Just so there is no confusion...

I can attest that my 2012 Nissan Leaf has both a J1772 and a CHAdeMO (for DC fast charging) port.

And my 2012 Nissan Leaf can, will, and does L2 charge from the Ford Charge Station Pro (FCSP) using the 'hack' - the hack being a J1772 extension cord with one end trimmed to fit into the top (J1772) part of the CCS1 plug on the FCSP.

The CCS1 combines L2 J1772 and L3 DC Fast charging into one plug/port.

The FCSP communicates with my Nissan Leaf using the J1772 protocol.
It also communictes with my Ford F-150 Lightning using the J1772 protocol.
The FCSP can ONLY charge a vehicle at a L2 (J1772) rate.
The FCSP CANNOT DC FAST charge a vehicle.
It only has the CCS1 plug to accommodate V2H (vehicle to home) using the HIS system Ford has authorized via the two DC pins on the CCS1 port and plug.

I hope that is clear.

PS: there IS an adapter to adapte the CHAdeMO port to CCS1 for fast DC charging, but it is rather expensive.

So with the adapter, the 2012 Nisssan Leaf COULD use a CCS1 charger for fast DC charging.

How to us CCS1 with a Nissan Leaf for Fast DC charging with a very expensive adapter:
