Is mine the only state that punishes folks for buying an EV?

Oklahoma also has an additional tax for registering an EV. I think it was about $150/yr

KY is no friend to any that registers a vehicle, and that goes twice for an EV owner. $160 if fully electric and $60 or $80 for a hybrid.

I would never complain about paying my fair share, but I haven’t driven more than 6,000 miles a year since retiring several years ago. That $160 would pay for a lot more gas tax than 6,000 miles worth.

On the other hand I buy a lot of boat and offroad gas that DOES have tax on it that I can't remove, but I shouldn't be paying on that. Somehow I don't get to write that off either.

No, it does not. To pay the EV $200 tax that is equivalent of 714 gallons of gas. I didn’t burn thru that much gas with my ICE. Just take away the gas tax and penalize every vehicle $200. Another thing, you are penalized on value and upgrade. You can drive a 1978 LTD for $10 a year, but if you retire that ole girl and upgrade to lighter and more efficient vehicle…boom.
What is the incentive to upgrade to a less polluting car? Still four tires but I have to pay so much more?

I did my 2023 taxes today. All done except adding clean vehicle. Was getting state a refund. Added form (8936) to include EV, helped on federal, crushed and now owe on state. Not EV friendly.

You know, I have to report back on this! When I went to buy my plate I told them I had a 2023 Ford F150. That was apparently plenty good enough for them. I just paid the regular tag fee for non-com truck plates. It does not seem they have any kind of a VIN check program in place, and frankly I'm not going to be the one to put them on notice. $200 saved for the good guys!

California charges $175 for EV registration but my entire registration I paid for my '22 Lightning was almost $1000 !!!

Someone is ripping someone...

The high cost is the weight charge in California.

In South Dakota, the annual EV fee is $50. Our Fuel tax is $.42. Average fuel economy here is 21mpg.
That means for my average usage of 20,000 miles per year, the fuel tax is about $400. I will happily pay $50.

I tried that in Texas and it didn’t work. I still got hammered with a $200 fee.
