I've been out of shape at the start of weeklong rides before. By day 3, you're usually used to it. It's better to take the lowest gears that you can get on your bike if you're riding in the mountains whether you're in shape or not. I shoot for low 20s as expressed in gear inches, 4mph gets you up the pass eventually.I'm not in shape for something like that. I really enjoy being a support person.
