sw engineering manager,
Wiring my garage for EV charging.
For now it will feed from the main panel and will just have the one 60 amp circuit powering a hardwired 48 amp charger (going with the Emporia).
But I am anticipating having at least two electric vehicles to charge in there someday, or maybe an ER-sized battery with an 80 amp charger so I am putting in a 125 amp sub panel. I also hope to someday reroute that panel to be fed from its own time of use meter. I am wiring the feed using surface mount conduit on the outside of the back of the garage.
Just letting off some steam here that pulling #1 wire outside on a ladder in the dark and cold of a MN December evening is kind of a pain.

Ah man, I’ve been there. Wish I had advice for you, but keep exercising that patience and get it right the first time!

Stiff wire gets even stiffer when it’s cold. PVC conduit gets brittle. It’s not fun. If you’re running PVC, don’t forget expansion joints as required.

Yeah, not looking forward it. Will do it next week as my Lightning (theoretically) will be here in the next week or 2.

Same issue here as well. Have a Mach E and am replacing the generic Ford charger with an Emporia that should be here in the next day or so. Have an ER Lariat Lightning, and want to install the Charge Station Pro at full 80 Amps, so will pull 1 AWG AL service entrance cable and then use a small box to transition to 3 AWG copper for the charge station.

Can't wait!

Why Aluminum service entrance? Is it a long run?

Yeah, about 100 feet from the breaker main to the edge of the house. Copper would have cost more than the Lightning LOL

Will use a terminal/distribution block to transition from Al to Cu for the charger itself

Just letting off some steam here that pulling #1 wire outside on a ladder in the dark and cold of a MN December evening is kind of a pain.
Got the wire pulled through the final set of turns and into the main panel where the #1 wire was also a PITA to cram into an already-full main panel.
The Lightning did come in handy to power a light while I had the main power off making the connections.
Hoping to get the inspector out on Monday and then I will be set to charge at home.
