Hi guys,

I have a 2022 Platinum that I got in October. It came with 22" wheels and winter tires only. I'm thinking of downgrading to 20" (Lariat-size) wheels and tires for summer (and eventually winter) and I was wondering if anyone else has done this and if they noticed a difference in ride quality? I'm doing it for both that and cost savings as 22" tires are expensive. I also must say I don't like the look of the Platinum wheels.

Has anyone had any success selling the Platinum wheels? I'm in Canada and haven't seen any for sale, not sure if I can sell them.

Thanks!

I'm kind of doing that now, bought my 23 Platinum with aftermarket rims and All-Terrain tires. I like the look of my dark blue truck with black rims, but I need at least 250 miles of range and these don't do it in the cold.

I ordered Lariat rims on ebay that are powder-coated black which should be here tomorrow.

I couldn't do it in my situation, but there are a few people on ebay exchanging lariat rims and powder coating them (they send you powder-coated black rims with UPS labels to return your grey ones). Might be worth seeing if they would exchange lariat rims for platinum's.

Tempting to drive out there and buy your Platinum wheels off you.

Downsizing to the Lariat 20s will probably give you better range overall. Maybe affect your ride quality as well, most likely softer since the sidewall on the 20s is taller than the 22s? Otherwise, it'll be a direct swap, shouldn't affect fitment.

Thanks for that advice, I will definitely look into that. Can you please provide me with the link to the service you are using? I can't seem to find them.

We could meet in Kingston if you like. :)

I will be switching only in spring when the snow is gone... (April?)

And rob me of a scenic drive out to QC? no way, lol.. Shoot me a DM on price and I'll convince my better half. Otherwise, I can at least fish around the Toronto area for a potential buyer for you too.

The next step is finding a nice replacement 20" kit. I'm assuming buying OEM 20" Lariat wheels will be very expensive (likely $500+ per wheel), so now I'm looking for an aftermarket kit that might even have lighter wheels and decrease unsprung weight to help range a bit.

Hello Robert,

I am in the same boat as you: a Canadian with a '22 platinum planning to upgrade to 20". I was able to take advantage of a crazy sale this past black friday and got a set of 20" Vorsteiner VR601 wheels for 50% off! Plus with free shipping inside the continental USA I shipped them to my friend who will bring them to Canada for me in the spring. The entire package for $850 USD shipped to your door is pretty unbeatable. These have to be the best quality wheels out there that you can get for that price: light, strong and sexy as heck. My setup will be the VR601s and Michelin Defender LTX M+S rubber.

It doesn't look like they sell the simpler version of the VR601 anymore but they are running another 50% off sale at the moment. I'm not crazy about the current set of designs - they are a bit "too much" for me - but these may appeal to others.

You might be able to sell your current setup on Kijiji as I've seen other lightning 22" sets up there from time to time. There are also businesses I've seen on Kijiji that sell used/good condition OEM 'take off' packages, so that could be an option to get rid of your current setup and offset your costs. Considering how much a single wheel costs to buy OEM, the market price you may get for a complete second hand set isn't great. I might end up just keeping mine.

Incidentally, any Ford OEM wheel from 2004+ F-150s 18" and up will fit without issue as the 6x135mm bolt pattern and 87.1MM bore are the standard but you need to be mindful of the max load rating for the particular wheel.

Hey Robo!

Can you please link me the deal you found? I'll monitor it to see if they go on promotion again. What is the weight rating we're looking for per wheel exactly? :) sorry for the ignorant question.

I'm assuming you're buying the rubber in Canada?

Thank you!

Rob

EDIT: They are $950 shipped at Vorsteiner right now, not bad. I like them. They are aggressive but still nice. I wonder if there's any range effect given that they are so "open"...

hi!

check it out, vorsteiner wheels. They have a sale on right now on for another three days and free shipping is included.

I found a link here to the VR601 wheel that provides the specs and confirms the wheel unfortunately isn't available anymore. Wheel weight: 29.4 pounds; max load 2600 pounds. So I expect there will be a pretty significant benefit from cutting unsprung weight. Nothing they offer right now is 29.4 pounds though.

I am planning on getting the tires here. I'm keeping an eye out for sales/promotions and whatnot but I'm not in a rush so I'm content to wait for the best price. I wanted to get a set with the white lettering on the sidewall but it doesn't seem like they make those anymore.

Next I'm looking to upgrade the sway bars to Hellwig products to tighten up the handling and body roll.

I do not work for vorsteiner and I'm not getting paid for this. I got the tip on the wheels from another owner here months ago.

Oh I was looking at the wrong wheels. :p The 601BL. They are more aggressive. Yours are much nicer and sexier. Darn, I wish they were still available. I'll write to them to see if they will get more/will honor price. :) Thanks for the tip!

It's black, so black wheels will look better than the silver (?) Platinum wheels... I haven't done much to modify it as I'm trying to take it easy on $$, it's my second car, so... :) I have deleted the antenna and put that little peg thing as I don't use radio, but that's about it. I will soon be installing OpenPilot (Comma 4 on order) because BlueCruise sucks, and I'm used to Tesla FSD (my other car).
