Probably need about 60kWh. Downside of that is that a 32kWh 48v battery pack is 600 lbs and you'd need two + inverters, wiring, etc so you'd be up against your payload numbers rather quickly without even accounting for any passengers or other equipment. Towing would be out the window unless you had everything on the trailer similar to how Martin ran the generator while towing but would take some planning to not overdo the tongue weight. An ideal extender would be like something James did with his trex camper wiring directly into the DC side but that wouldn't be a simple DIY project or cheap to do safely.very interested. going 70, feeding at 48amp, how much power can be delivered before the main battery gets to 10%? that should or can impact how much "storage" is needed for ideal sizing?
yeah, from a pure energy potential to weight standpoint, the generator is the better option. Would probably need to be a newer generator if non-inverter to have a low enough thd though. The Ford 20kW generator Martin was using has a 17 gallon tank provides the equivalent of over 100kWh of energy running full tilt. Weight is 600lbs+gas/oil. Main downfall of the generator that Martin ran into was it flooding but I imagine that hitch mount he was using introduced quite a bit of vibration. The Duromax XP16000ih (inverter generator), Zach used was about 370lbs+gas/oil and about 75kWh of energy granted you'll run out of charge on the truck before all the gas is used at 48 amps. They released a 28000 (22000 running) inverter generator not long ago but the cost is eye watering at ~$8k.It’s a solid alternative to have. The battery thing in my opinion is silly. Adding that much weight for not as much energy wouldn’t do it for me. I know there’s plenty of you that are like gas/diesel hard nos.
The simple math if you were adding 11kw or 22kw an hour with the added weight I’m sure you could get 2mi/kwh, what’s the generator and gas gonna weigh? Less than 500 for a smaller generator?

At 11kwh you’d be able to get 44kwh giving you another 88 miles of range and you’d likely get close to double that so 176 miles? Just on the charge alone over the time and if you charged from the word go you could probably push another 22+ miles on the slower charging speed and potentially another 60-80 on the faster one? I’m sure there’s gonna be losses but if the generator was sized right it seems good to me.
I know my math sucks but having something you can move in and out as needed rather than a large battery out of a leaf seems like a decent trade. Gives some of the older trucks over 500 miles.
I’d probably find an efi one. I have a 24 flash so I’m limited there. I don’t see the need to try and add a larger onboard charger because mine is 11.5 I think. I guess unless that’s something someone has figured out? Being able to stretch a trip out when towing a trailer when you’re probably gonna be going slower anyway is the ticket for me. Might as well just save the hassle and buy a Powerboost.
There's only one AC/DC inverter charger built into the truck. It can only take in 48amps max at 240v.What happens if you have a generator plugged into the bed charge port, and you also hook up something on the regular charge port (either AC or DC) at the same time?
In the video, @ZSC100 discusses the safety mechanism that disables the bed port if the charge port door is open. That would require $texas to do correctly and not be a simple diy job due to the high voltage. Not to mention it'd likely limit an already limited audience.@ EverDrive
