Last week I went to the redwoods near Santa Cruz, CA. Yesterday while washing the truck, I noticed that some friendly forest critter decided to chew on the rubber seals around the moonroof.

Has anyone else run into this, or am I just really lucky? Also, has anyone replaced these seals (or had them replaced)? I'm just curious how challenging the repair is and what kind of cost I might be looking at.

Side note: About 4–6 weeks ago, I applied a very light coating of silicone paste to the seals. I wonder if that could have acted as an attractant. The truck has been washed several times since then, but I'm curious if anyone has heard of that happening.

Yes, it has happened before. Once that I've seen on the forums.

Here is my documentation of the replacement. Mine was warranty replaced. I did not have any rubber seal protectant on it.

With the new rubber seal, I used some 3-in-1 RV rubber seal protector product on all the seals. Hoping to avoid the same dry rot. Rubber seals have held up so far.

I think someone on this thread was not as lucky with warranty coverage due to observed rodent chewing. What counted as the mechanism of damage seemed to be a factor between our repairs.

After getting drenched by rain water that collected in my sun roof and did not drain in my 1968 Peugeot 404, I covered the rubber seal on the roof with metal tape.

Seals are just one part of the problem with sun/moon roofs. The other part is the drains getting clogged.

Why I will never own a vehicle with one again.

I saw that somebody on the forums had covered theirs with PPF. That way you still get the extra light if you want it. I didn't want the sun roof, but I DID want the Lariat trim, I have found in the winter months I really enjoy the extra light it lets in though.

I love my roof and being able to open it. It’s not that hard to care for it. I check the drains about every 6 months and keep the seals clean. I do t park under trees when out and home it’s always in my shop.

In case any were curious, after a thorough inspection of the truck, there was damage to the moon roof seals, the driver and passenger drip molding near the rear of the cab, the rear power window seals, the seals for the driver door, passenger door, rear passenger door and to the tonneau cover. The likely culprit was crows as they left muddy footprints on the tonneau cover. Thankfully we have a $250 comprehensive deductible which was a steal compared to the cost of $5.3k for the repairs!
