My 2025 Job 1 Flash is now over a year old and has 20,000+ miles on the clock. So I thought I take a trip to my local Ionna Rechargery and do some tests.
I did an Out of Spec style 10% challenge as well as a 10 to 80% charging session. For those not familiar with the 10% challenge, you arrive to the charger preconditioned at 10%, charge for 15 minutes, then see how far you can go at 80mph until you hit 10% again. For both charging sessions climate was set to auto at 75°. Exterior temp was 71°F.
The results:
10% Challenge
39.0478kWh delivered
SoC at session end was 40%
Average charging speed was 155.68kw
Distance traveled 68.3 miles.
Calculated efficiency of 1.9mi/kWh
10% to 80% Charge
95.2787kWh delivered
Average charging speed was 136.58kw
Charge time 41:57
A few observations.
Both charging sessions held 500A for ~7:30 then aggressively tapered down to 400A.
Battery temps were fairly low with the 10-80 maxing out at 109°F.
Out of Spec was able to deliver more power in their 10% challenge run in a 2023 Lightning, 40.3kWh, however their testing was done at 49°F. This is also why they managed 63 miles at 1.6mi/kWh.
All in all, not horrific, but also the absolute worst in class performance. What’s frustrating is there seems to be thermal headroom to push higher amps longer. I wish Ford held 500A for the first 50% or 60% of SoC. Other manufacturers allow another 20F into the pack before reducing current.
