2025 F150 Lightning Flash 131kWh
My 2025 Job 1 Flash is now over a year old and has 20,000+ miles on the clock. So I thought I take a trip to my local Ionna Rechargery and do some tests.

I did an Out of Spec style 10% challenge as well as a 10 to 80% charging session. For those not familiar with the 10% challenge, you arrive to the charger preconditioned at 10%, charge for 15 minutes, then see how far you can go at 80mph until you hit 10% again. For both charging sessions climate was set to auto at 75°. Exterior temp was 71°F.

The results:
10% Challenge
39.0478kWh delivered
SoC at session end was 40%
Average charging speed was 155.68kw
Distance traveled 68.3 miles.
Calculated efficiency of 1.9mi/kWh

10% to 80% Charge
95.2787kWh delivered
Average charging speed was 136.58kw
Charge time 41:57

A few observations.
Both charging sessions held 500A for ~7:30 then aggressively tapered down to 400A.

Battery temps were fairly low with the 10-80 maxing out at 109°F.

Out of Spec was able to deliver more power in their 10% challenge run in a 2023 Lightning, 40.3kWh, however their testing was done at 49°F. This is also why they managed 63 miles at 1.6mi/kWh.

All in all, not horrific, but also the absolute worst in class performance. What’s frustrating is there seems to be thermal headroom to push higher amps longer. I wish Ford held 500A for the first 50% or 60% of SoC. Other manufacturers allow another 20F into the pack before reducing current.

Do those IONNA chargers support 800 volts allowing the Silverado to charge at a much higher power level?

Yes. They’re 400kw chargers.

Nice data! Adore my lightning but ya the fast charging is quite poor (sorry but it’s true). Luckily I’ve only used dc chargers a handful of times in my 60,000 miles with a lightning. Fun fact my wife’s 22 model 3 standard range lfp is actually a better roadtrip car if speed and short stops is your objective. The range is quite a bit shorter however it charges at about the same power and goes about twice as far on each kWh. The lightning destroys the Tesla in comfort though.

Yeah, still searching for the perfect road trip vehicle. It may be the 2025 Porsche Cross Turismo or Sport Turismo. I just them to depreciate a little more. 🤣

That’s a good pick. Not the fastest but I’m partial to the Cadillac Escalade IQ. Anyone want to loan me 150,000$?

Also a good choice. I also have my eye on the upcoming iX5. It’s another 800v option.

Over time with my day to day driving, how/why do results of these tests matter? 2025 Lightning Platinum, 131kwh battery, primarily Level 2 charge at home, expect 8,000 miles/year, mostly around town with occasional highway, plugged in garage whenever not driving, West Michigan climate.

I'm OK with the conservative approach Ford takes. It means our batteries should fare better in the long run. 15 minutes isn't enough time to take a pee and get a coffee anyway
15 minutes isn’t enough? I was able to hit the restroom, then feed and change my 6 month old in that period of time.

Not sure why you commented as it doesn’t impact you. This is directed at those of us that leave our local 320 mile bubble……

Hah, you move much quicker than I do. It takes 15 minutes just for the coffee line here. I'd like to see (and time) your set of activities in 15 minutes. At the very least, it would be amusing.

Haha, baby life has made me hustle. Typically at a charging stop (pre-baby) I’m hitting the restroom, grabbing a snack, and walking my two dogs. This is always completed in less than 20 minutes. My typical charging stops are 20 to 30 minutes on my frequent multi-charging stop trips.

i was worried about the "slow" fast charging but for me it ended up being a non issue. on trips where i need it I want a real pause anyway, like 25min, not 10.

ive also noticed that i tend to charge faster than most, probably because i charge at 20-50% to whatever i need (usually 70+) which is where i tend to get 180-190kwh (going to 80 isnt worth the time spent waiting). i always see a bunch of model 3 teslas just sitting there charging slow.

in exchange my battery life is still 100% at 33k miles which is neat (full pack is also at 404A).

id say this is only a problem for very long trips, tow, etc., say 8h driving and you gotta make it work quick / short pause, or you have 100mi range because towing uphill type of stuff. in this case, if frequent, i wouldnt get an ev.. but if i did and it was a truck, then the GM trucks

i personally do 4-5h "long trips" with a pause.

Just traded my Polestar in toward a Lucid Air Grand Touring over the weekend. I've only been roaming around SoCal since but I'm excited to take the family on an actual road trip. They weren't lying when they said their benchmark was an e39 M5! This thing eats freeways like my TDI Wagon used to do.
