Of course its happening, but the people don't have a choice. You choose, want a "free market" or a "dictated market".
Russia \ Saudi Arabia and the kickbacks from the visits from Kushner kinda works against your statement.

Follow the oil money and you will see that its not the "free market" you are talking about.

Something to consider, all this is if* the EREV is released. I'm not convinced it's forthcoming. Until there is the YT videos showing it, testing, etc. that companies usually throw out to the online world, it's just vaporware. No if, ands or buts...

The only thing we have now is what Ford is saying. I've read online speculation this is a stall tactic to see which way to pivot depending on political winds and tech. Maybe something to it. Maybe the intent is real. Still, all vaporware until there is something more tangible to see.

Why will a EREV sell so many more than pure EV? Seems to me if you don't want an EV you wont buy it and if you want an EV, you wont buy it. How many people really want a Ford truck EV and are just sitting on the sidelines because of range?

I'm willing to bet it will be closer to a wash in sales than a major win. The only way this makes any sense to me is if Ford ends up losing the ICE only version of the F150. Otherwise what is the business case here?

Where I would disagree with others who argue there is this big market for EREVs my reply is let's wait and see. I'm willing to bet there isn't. Ford went into this thinking they would sell 100k EV truck units a year, instead they sold 100k units in 3 years. How many bought the lighnting because it was only electric? Probably more than half. What happens to those potential lost sales if it gains a motor? lose a good portion of those you now have to make that up in new sales.

Also, what are the chances the new lightning is more expensive than a pure ICE brethren? or pure ev? You just added complexity and weight, and materials. Unless you greatly reduce the battery size. Then whats the point there?

It seems to me that if Ford was really going to do this right they would have gone EREV with the larger truck offerings (F250, etc.). Those are most likely going to be purchased for towing.

Maybe I'm missing something. Just seems like a way for Ford to try and put a good spin on a bad situation.

People who say this is a step forward have never owned a PHEV that's broken down. It's more complicated than an EV and less reliable.

i3 REx was less reliable than the i3.
Volt was less reliable than the Bolt

I've been covering this industry for 20 years, and seriously, it feels like everything we've done in the last 20 years has just been wiped out by [redacted] wanting to [redacted] POTUS.
I agree with you! The United States is going backwards in technology because of the criminal in the White House! They are owned by the oil industry!
I will never buy a ice truck again.

That is just not true. The government 'subsidizes' businesses all the time. Just look at the farmers. They subsidized High Efficiency HVAC products for many years. Hedging to slow the inevitable results of carbon based fuel is smart not risky.
Look at the industries you mentioned. Farming, good luck without them. Food chain collapses. HVAC, every fricking building in America has one. Electric trucks?? Who needs then, just the minorities in this group.

Residual value was already at rock bottom and T3, EREV, doesn't matter which one and it would have taken an additional hit, so that is what it is.

With Ford officially pulling the plug even for 2026, it means it's already considered a legacy product and as such there will only be critical bugfixes and no additional/future development going forward which is a bit of a bummer considering some things are still half baked.

The Lightning had enough range for me so I dont want to complicate things by adding an on-board generator. (Plus Im guessing that means we lose the frunk)
But we'll see what the options are once it's time to replace it (boy am I glad I opted for the extended warranty in the end).
I'm with you. My Lightning does everything I want so I'm still very happy with it. A thought about bug fixes: As for Synch4 and Fordpass, we have to remember that they are no not unique to the Lightning and Mach-e, they are used in every vehicle Ford makes, ICE/BEV/HEV,

My own rant - The lack of EREV information makes me think they've barely got that truck development started. I hope I'm wrong. I also hope it's a lot more performant than the Ram Charger's small electric mileage before the generator kicks in.

I'm sure a lot of their decision was sales related (and Ford helped f this up by jacking up prices quickly and making pros hard to get), but I can't help but be annoyed by Farley for all the big stage events and announcements regarding investing in EVs, whether it was planned vehicles (most of which were delayed -> cancelled, or EU only) or the new factories. Now, within a year of the US political climate changing, he starts changing his mind on all of it. It gives me the impression when the next Democratic administration comes in, he'll do it again. I don't want to do business with a company that flips their position every ~4 years. I guess I give him props for having not yet put on a MAGA hat or shirt like Toyota's CEO.

I'm 70 years old and cespite this announcement I still expect it to last me 15 years. Sparky will probably be the last vehicle I ever own.
We used to keep vehicles 10+ years. 1998 Explorer was 15 years. As we grew older, period dropped. 7 or 8 years. 3 years....

In my retirement budget that I put together years ago (to ensure we had enough to retire), I budgeted a new vehicle every 3 years. Have to enjoy life.

Bought one in 2021, the 2022 didn't count because we sold the 21 for a profit and bought the 22 for the same cost. Then the Lightning in 2023.

Mach-E is now 3.5 years old, and I would have gotten the Explorer EV (announced in May 2021) right around now. Alas, nothing to buy.

So, will be doing research on options for next summer possibly. Rivian R2seems interesting, but I would wait to see. Kia EV9 was of interest, but seems to have many issues.

Based on the lackluster Lightning sales, how can anyone say this is a bad idea? I know everyone here loves their truck on this board, but Mach-E sales have outpaced the Lightning by a fairly wide margin, which means the market right now for an all-electric truck isn’t looking great.

I don’t mind the idea, so I’ll wait to see the details. Hopefully, it’s not a full-blown V6 that Dodge is using.
By full blown do you mean supercharged/turbo charged forced induction? If so, yes it will likely need to be a full blown inline 4/small v6 engine to maintain output once the battery is depleted. If not for ed induction it will be a V8.

Welp. Looks like resale value is gonna drop. Like others, I have no desire to go back to gas. I got the extended warranty so I’ll drive it until it’s no longer feasible and when I can’t replace parts any longer salvage the battery for a DIY home back up and scrap the rest.

Hopefully Scout survives but with how this country is who knows what I’ll drive next, until be battery for sure.
Scout looks like a mid size pickup so it will compete with: " The first vehicle from the Universal EV Platform will be the fully connected midsize pickup truck assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant starting in 2027." Fords press release.

Five years here, two EVs. But like I say, just because it has a gas tank doesn't mean you have to put gas in it? Sounds like it still plugs in..
I think just the opposite. keep the generator take full of gas. drive to recharge.

Also I note many on this thread miss this part of the announcement: "The first vehicle from the Universal EV Platform will be the fully connected midsize pickup truck assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant starting in 2027." If I have to buy another vehicle it might just be one of these.

That is the reality from the current administration. You are completely forgetting what China is doing and the infrastructure they have in place because the government INVESTED in the tech.

So imagine if we took the AI boom that we are having now and use some of that towards charging infrastructure, better battery structures, back to the American people that would be. Biden invested in the american infrastructure...you know for the american people.

But look at the economy now that people voted for. inflation, higher prices, tarriffs....all in one year. All that winning.
China has estimated anywhere from $250 to 400 billion in just EV manufacturers then another $250 billion in infrastructure. The US is a trillion behind in investment.

The other thing people tend to forget is that eastern China is basically the size of the eastern half of the US and that's where all the charging infrastructure is situated for the most part. The US charging network is going to have far larger.

Another angle is that China can and is building the power plants that they need to power those charging stations as well. That is a huge problem within the US.

I understand Ford's decision. I'm just saying I don't like it. But they are a public traded company that needs to make money. I understand that. But at the same time they're putting out an announcement on the lightning forum. Lol like they thought they'd get a lot of backers on that front. @Ford Motor Company doesn't seem to have a clue about its audience in this context.

That said, there's lots of sponsored ads that I'm seeing on this thread for the scout forum and the Rivian forum. LOL
I think many missed this from the press release: "The first vehicle from the Universal EV Platform will be the fully connected midsize pickup truck assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant starting in 2027".

If the truck is propelled only by electric motors it’s an electric vehicle. Same power, torque, etc.

If the gas is only there to charge the battery WHEN NEEDED then I don’t have any issues. Obviously it’ll depend on how they implement the tech but I’m not going to write it off until I see it in action.
Nope. It’s an electrified drivetrain but will still kill you if you operate in your garage.
