I'm at 80,000 miles. next year I'll be out of warranty. If I have a module failure out of warranty I will be upgrading to the extended pack for around $5000 from eBay. plug and play.

Would really like the powertrain extension given the known battery failures. If ford truly stands behind their EV promise, another 50k on powertrain would put all of us at ease.
And it would put them at parity with Tesla on the CyberTruck (150,000 miles) and only slightly behind Rivian on their highest trims (175,000 miles)

Also Ford could / should sell coverage beyond that mileage like Tesla and Rivian both do.

Frankly the federal bare minimum was never appropriate for the segment.

Each pack has 9 modules, and usually these failures mean only 1 cell in 1 module is bad, so I think there could be a real market for profitably parting out an old pack at a fraction of the cost of Ford's parts department.

Wait, the ford extended warranty plan for EVs doesn't cover the battery? I hadn't bought it yet, was waiting until I get a couple of years in to decide whether I think the warranty would be worthwhile, but if it doesn't cover the HV battery that certainly affects it's value...

Nope! Zero coverage for the HV battery.

Zero *additional* coverage, to be clear. 👍🏼
I suppose it's kind of potato, potahto, but I think it's more accurate to say the battery is NOT covered by the extended warranty, because it is an exclusionary warranty, and the HVB is a specific named exclusion. Any payments made for coverage of the battery is certainly handled by a different accounting bucket internally.

Ford COULD offer extended coverage for it (and I think they should, some for free, some paid) but there is no product for it.

how are you going to do this, yourself or a private shop?
There aren't a ton of independent EV mechanics but WattWorks in NC demonstrated the process well. Don't want to say anyone could do it, but it's mostly about safely lifting the truck to have enough clearance to be able to (again safely) lower the pack.

Could see this being theoretically possible with 12-ton jack stands and a custom built platform with bottle jacks to lower the pack.

The pack is serviced from its top once removed and just bolts back together.

Went to the dealership this morning with an appointment and they told me it would take them over a week to diagnose. They showed me another lightning in the shop with a battery dropped for a module replacement. Wouldn’t even price up the replacement for me. Only told me it would be $210 for diagnostic and then they can price it.

Needless to say I said no thanks. Will be looking to get rid of the truck.

Maybe we can get some sort of group pack purchase coordinating, distributing modules where needed.

They don't need a week to diagnose it, they need a day at most. If they want to keep your truck for a week find another dealership that will make an appointment.

Replacing your vehicle might make you feel better but it will cost a whole lot more than whatever a battery replacement costs. I'm not saying don't get rid of it. If you don't think you can have confidence in it you won't be happy with it. Just don't get rid of it for financial reasons.
