2022 Ford Lightning Lariat ER, 2022 Tesla Model S
I have been looking at new and used Lightning's as replacement for my Leased Tesla ending soon. Something i noticed after test driving a 2022 Lariat and a 2025 Platinum at the same dealership that i stopped at. When i was messing around with the stock navigation, when i typed my parents house in which is 11 hours away, i noticed the 2025 had me mostly stopping at Tesla chargers along the route, but when i did the same in the 2022 Lariat, i noticed it didn't have any Tesla chargers listed. I was shocked how terrible it was compared to the 2025, because the 2nd stop had me going to a charger that said charge time would be 7+ hours. I mentioned this to the sales person and he said no one uses the stock navigation and uses Apple Maps, but when i setup my phone on the 2022 to test things out, the route was very different having me stop 5 times to charge at all Electrify America chargers adding about 40 minutes to the route vs the 2025 stock navigation.

So i have a few questions, because coming from Tesla i feel like this is a huge difference, when i mapped the same address from the Tesla before i left the Dealership it had the quickest route 37 minutes shorter than both Lightnings.

Is the 2022 able to be updated or something to mirror the 2025, it seemed way better?

Is Apple MAPS actually the best method with the 2022, i did a quick google search and many mentioned google maps with Android Auto, but i don't own an Android device?

Would ABRP be better? I have not used it in many ages after getting the Tesla, i used it with my previous EV BMW i3 via phone.

I ask the question, because the dealership with the 2022 just reached out Monday with a pretty aggressive offer for me to purchase it.

You need to check the filters on the ‘22 mapping. Filters button in the Public Charging App and un tap Hide stations needing adapter.

Personally I prefer ABRP, I use it to plan trips and to check the recent reviews on each charger station that I plan on using so I know they are working. Then when on the trip I use the maps app (google or apple) to plot stops at the chargers I plan to use.

Do you like just add the locations your own or are you saying you let it plan them out and change if ABRP says differently?

If you use ABRP, grab a good OBD Bluetooth dongle like the OBDLinkCX and tie it in with your vehicle profile. This allows ABRP to dynamically figure out a bunch of things. And it figures them out and routes you very accurately. There are still bugs in the app but overall it has worked for a couple of my 3000 mile trips.

Does anyone plan things out on ABRP and then use the stock navigation and plug in all the stops so it tracks the battery and pre-conditions?

I’m trained on using ABRP then setting destination via Apple Maps.

Recently, Apple Maps is actually good on its own as it sends you to superchargers and seems to choose the same route as ABRP for my trips anyway. Definitely still +1 for checking tesla and PlugShare or ABRP to assess functionality at the chargers selected by apple.

Honestly, i wouldn’t worry about preconditioning. My experience in both heat and cold road trips, the lightning either is in a good DCFC charge temperature all the time, or if too cold, gets itself there via charging quickly. In both cases my judgement is its not worth my time messing with Ford Nav In order to get preconditioning.

My 23 Lightning still doesn’t show Tesla Chargers, so i use the truck nav and the Tesla app at the same time. I wish, Ford would give us older Lightning owners an upgrade that had Tesla chargers.

All of them have their strengths and weaknesses. None of them seem to allow much flexibility in selecting or changing charging locations.

For that reason, I just use standard navigation programs without selecting an electric vehicle and then plan on looking for a charging stations in the area where we suspect we will need them on the trip, when we get closer to our final destination, I either use the Ford charging program to guide us to the appropriate.charging station, or else I just enter the location of the charging station as a waypoint.

Believe me, as you get more used your truck, you will get over most of the range anxiety that frustrated all of us when we first started driving this vehicle. It's really not much different than a gas engine except there are a lot fewer fueling stations available so you do have to do a little more planning.

Does Dongle make a huge difference. I had app decided it was hard to use and deleted it.

I just took the time to change vehicle on google maps which I have preferred for navigating in my gas vehicle. Now it shows charging stations. Often use on board ford locator. I use Tesla app and just added Rivian app. It’s impressive for point A to B charge planning.

What’s best way to find charging accommodations? I’ve yet to do a big road trip?

It did make a big difference. Over time my reference consumption percentages got high and higher. It’s predictions were pretty spot on from that point.

Once you get the hang of the app it grows on you. That being said it is pretty buggy at times. When iOS Maps got NACS routing I decided to just use that.

My 2023 does. Do you have filter set for “use with adapter”? Though I will tell you sometimes getting close enough to get Tesla’s short cable to reach takes a good bit of maneuvering.

I will check my filter settings. I never selected anything about adapter on filter. I wonder what the default setting is?
